Update on Beardie

Helen Aug 15, 2003 03:34 AM

Hi,
If you remember me on here asking for advice a couple of days ago about the Beardie with the bad eye which was bleeding well here is an update...

I took him to a local vet who didnt know anything about reptiles and she couldnt put a symptom to it but gave me some drops called Fucithalmic, I got hone disappointed with the vet and gave a very experienced reptile breeder friend of mine a call, he said I should get Chloramphenicol eye drops, so I phoned the vet and went down there and they gave me some of these.
I was still worried about him and paranoid as he wasnt feeding so I mixed him up some wax worms, mealworms and his favourite greens, with some probiotics, liquidized down so I could put it in a syringe and in the last couple of days he has taken to force feeding really well.
As I was still worried for him I took him to a reptile vet which is quite a drive from here, but he is worth it! The reptile vet said the Chloramphenicol drops were right to give him and that he will lose his eye over the next 10 days or so but he shouldnt die, he had loads of blood swelling up under his eye lid and his eye kept bleeding but the vet said that this will happen and that I am right to force feed him and carry on with the drops.
Well I came down this morning and a lot of his swelling has gone down. It seems it was a scratch to his eye or something simular.
I feel better now too, just by a trip to the reptile vets, it has made me feel a lot more confindent that he will get better, and now I dont have to sit up all night with him. But just speaking to the correct vet has sorted my head out.

Anyway I just wanted to let you lot know that he is on the road to recovery although he still has a long way to go, the moral of the story is go and see the right vet, because not only is it better for your animal its good for you too!

I am so very happy to hear that he is going to get better and pull through this!

I agree about seeing a Reptile vet..... it makes a HUGE difference when you have a vet that actually knows what they are dealing with

Take care and good luck to you and your guy.
