I'm not really looking for one but someone local is "adopting" out a hatchling for $50. If it's a female I’m definitely going to get it. I have corns and kings and I love them. Do you guys think this is a good price for a male?

$50 is a good price for a leucy Texas rat. It is on the low side of the market price for them, but within the normal range of prices.

I bought mine at the Indy Reptile Show for $30.00 in Feb.. But I know that was an exceptional price. Mine is a female, is albino Leucistic and a good specimen. There are good deals to be had out there. May have to look around a bit though. I've seen a few of the bug eyed Leucs. for under $50.00. I would have paid a higher price for a good animal....just got lucky I guess. Especially since it was winter and I had the entire clutch to choose from. She's sweet and very hand tame too.
Happy hunting......maybe summer or fall would be better.

It is, as noted, within a normal range. If I were you, I would ask to "visit" with the snake. See how it handles. Especially if it is an older animal that may be a bit "set in its ways" in terms of disposition. If the snake is fairly gentle/easy to handle, I would say that's a pretty good price. If not, maybe not such a bargain. Again, I'm kinda assuming that this is not a baby leucy (which would usually calm with age). Not to say that you can't tame an adult, but an already tame/easy to handle adult would be nice.
On that note, make sure you get to see the snake's reaction when first picked up (by You or the owner). As you know, getting handed a snake and not getting nipped is no big deal. Picking one up and having no negative response is altogether different. I am usually the first to defend the disposition of Texas Rats, as I think most of them can be tamed when small. I might be kinda leery of an adult with an attitude. Duffy
I can second you statement on the difference between picking up and handling a Texas rat and when you most likely to get bit. The only time that either of my leucy Texas rats even look at me like they want to bite is when I first touch them to pick them up. Once they are out I can handle them like a cornsnake, without a care in the world.
