'07 Jags! First clutch....

mattbrock May 14, 2007 10:53 PM

Well, the first clutch of jags for the season started hatching this weekend. This pairing is from an '04 Reptilicus Reptiles Jaguar x Striped Coastal from Micheal Pennell. The results are good indeed! And this clutch was maternally incubated the entire process. Who needs incubators?

Look under mom's chin.....

Not very often do you see pics on here of maternally incubated eggs to term!

Very cool indeed!

Hey Todd,
Plan on seeing alot more maternally incubated clutches!

And Matt, you know what I think. Again, congrats! I haven't seen a baby Jag I didn't like yet! I'll take the one on the bottom right....and the top left....and the one kinda in the middle....and the one that's more banded....anyway, I'm think I'm getting carried away!

Yep, this is the first of many for me that will be maternally incubated. I have another due to hatch in about 28 more days that looks just as good as ever! I honestly think the reason you don't see much success with MI clutches is because most people don't do it. I really don't understand why, but these eggs IMO are in better care with mom than any artificial method.

And Yasser, slow down fella, I can't send all of them to you.....I gotta keep some for myself.

First congratulations on a nice looking batch. Maternal incubation is a cool process to watch. The female creates an incubator with her body . One of the main reasons to go with artificial incubation is in theory it's less wear on the female. Carpet python eggs are pretty forgiving and even under less then perfect conditions good hatch rates result using ether method.

I took this pic. the other day. This female is tightly wrapped around a freshly laid clutch.

I have heard that argument before, that MI created more stress for the females and that it is harder to prepare them for the next breeding season. Although I would agree under suboptimum conditions, in a captive environment I just don't believe that to be the case. The female knows what she needs when she needs it, and both of my females have eaten during the incubation. I haven't fed them meals that were large, as I would under normal circumstances, but they have recieved adequate nutrition, and there is no doubt they will be ready for next year.
