I was just wondering at what temp you guys call it quits.I usually head home when it hits the lower 60s.I wouldn like to know some of the lower temps alterna have been caught at.

I know many alterna have been caught much colder, but I myself tend to get demoralized at about 66-68 degrees, and head for lower elevations, the River Road, or back to the room.....

It is the ground and rock temps.. It may be in the mid 60s air wise but the ground could be just fine. This year we put up at 59 degrees but we really just hunted until we were tired. After all did you go there to just hang out in the hotel? I hunt despite the "bad indicators" myself.

I know it's mainly psychological, Lance, but that's the great thing about the western trans-pecos. If you think temps are too low (or too high), you're usually only an hour or so drive away from better conditions!

Novice question ...

How do you measure ground temps? Is there a quick and inexpensive device for taking accurate ground temps?

Getcha one a them Ray-tech temp guns. Pro Exotics sells some more economical varieties.

Search eBay for "raytek", their laser guns are $35-45. That's where I got mine years ago; (one 9V) battery life is great.

Geez, how prices have dropped. I think my antique raytek cost me around $275. How long ago was that? 8, 10 years?

Temp guns from $15 to $75.

These are the ones from Pro Exotic that Forks mentioned.

They are used by the grocery industry and probably every fast food place and restaraunt to check refrigeration temps. We have to log the temps in every department and on the sales counters in meat, dairy and produce at least 3 times a day.

My personal coldest air temp find was 67F. I've known of a couple at 65 but all were during prime breeding season other than a DOR male in April. I beleive all the cooler finds were males also.
