First Trip Of The Year... 4 Nights

stevenxowens792 May 15, 2007 08:18 AM

Well let us start out be answering this equation...
Rain Cold / High Pressure = NO ALTERNA

But we did see lots and lots of herps. 4 nights and observed
27 snakes total.
Coachwhips 4
Bull 2
Blacktail 2
Atrox 4
Scut 1
Lepidus (Crocket County) 1
Pictogaster (Black Gap) 1
Longnose 5
Ground 5
Night snakes 2
TMTC Spadefoot toads
TMTC Lizards all over the place
TMTC Tarantulas and Scorpians
TMTC Black Widows ... Good God they were everywhere...
1 VERY LARGE Centipede... Hope you class likes this Stu.

Most all were AOR. Spent most of our time in the Gap. Temps were in the high 50s everywhere else by 1:00 am or so. Gap temps were in the hi 60s low 70s late at night.

Gas at Stillwell is locked at 2.99 due to the old pump...

It was great running into Stu Tennyson who I used to bug all the time 10 years ago. Will try to post some pics later.
Pandale was completely flooded about 4 miles south of the crocket county line.

Sorry Coach and Mo that we didn't get to talk more. I wished we had more time...

Best Wishes,

Steven

At least you saw a good variety of other stuff. We're heading to Marathon for fri, sat, sun night-forecast isn't good, still looks too cold at night. looks like the Gap and RR for us!

...Road area was holding up as well as the gap temp and animal wise..

I will say this, hunting the Gap with a base camp in Sanderson makes for a very long return drive. I think that 5:30 AM was the earliest we got back.

Why did you guys not stay at Stillwell's??? You are right there! You guys kill me. I know Sanderson is more "hustle & bustle, but if you are hell bent for leather on huting the GAP, Stillwell's is the best bet! Just no too much to do during the day unless you want to wear yourself out hiking. you guys are getting too old for those long drives! I understand there was a roll over fatality between Marathon and Sanderson last week. They were not herpers but the driver did fall asleep. One person died. Be careful!

that I know of...

Before Spring break a Sanderson High school girl died in a head on collision on 90 in dense fog. During Spring break a 16 year old girl from Katy rolled a jeep and died on 385 south, two weeks after that a Marathon resident died in a single car accident between Marathon and Alpine.

I like staying at the Outback. It offers so many more options and Roy is very nice to us. Plus I am know addicted to the burritos at the grocery store.

Normally you have a chance of seeing more animals on your drive back to Sanderson from the gap, but not when temps are 57 degrees at 5:00 in the morning.

Lance (as usual) almost ran into Deer twice. This is not his fault since Deer naturally gravitate to him. I suspect that deer or some other wild animal probably caused the accidents that killed those people.

I am just glad to have observed all those animals. And nope, we brought nothing home for ourselves... We did pickup a couple of animals for others...

Take Care,

Steven Owens

Do the burritos and safety win out over gas prices and good company??? HHMMMMMMMMM. I certainly understand about the burritos! Those are damned good. I also understand the Roy and Ruth deal as well. They are awesome people. I actually do not think I could handle (anymore) all that driving all night and returning back as far as Sanderson from the GAP, at least for three or four nights straight. It was a wake up call for me when I remember looking at the clock, and when I looked at it again, 10 minutes had passed and I had no memory of what had taken place during those 10 minutes. I had been actively driving and sleeping at the same time zipping down 90 toward Sanderson. It is always good to have someone else with you that's for sure. Roy told me that that person fell asleep and rolled the vehicle. I would guess the driver lived, but I am not sure. Per what Joe said, I think more people die out there by these methods than we ever know or hear about. I think I need to invest in Vivarin stock. It works very well!
