pressure treated lumber????

argus333 May 15, 2007 11:27 AM

im about to start building new outdorr cage it will be 8x10x6 i was going to use presssure treated lumber because it will last longer in the elements i will be putting a coat of behr weatherproof wood finsh over the wood it does have in it a mildecide and algaecide it in but it is water based. wondering if this will be safe. this would be put on 2 weeks before construction to assure it would be fully dry and there are not really many spots where the lizard would come in contact with it directly. any suggestion are appreciated, let me know what others have used. being on east coast redwood is not a godd $ option. thanks

I have used pressure treated wood before and never had a problem. I have even used the old type of pressure treated wood that contained arsenic. I don't know about your neck of the woods but, the way they pressure treat wood here changed a few years ago because they were using it to build playgrounds for children and the authorities were afraid that it would be harmful to them. I would not be very worried about pressure treated wood unless it was mulched and it would have a chance of finding its way into their bellies. As long as you let it dry for a few days you should be okay.

That is a holding pen for wild caught common and spinny tail iguanas that I collect. The plywood on the top and bottom discourages rubbing and keeps them fro severely damaging themselves. It is 8Wx6Dx8H. I also built another adjacent to it after the picture was taken that is 6x8x8.
