2 bad sheds in a row??

z3speed4me May 15, 2007 12:48 PM

OK... my snake has had 2 bad sheds in a row now, it comes off in pieces not in a full body shed, and most of it comes off except a certain 2-3 inch area on its back, and its the same spot both times, the two sheds before this were PERFECT though

i put him in a shoebox with wet paper towels like you guys told me to last time, hopefully it works to get the rest off, only thing was that it took FOREVER to get him in there!

why is this happening? the environment is practically perfect

well i just took him out of the box and let him crawl on my hands, i held on right tight and the remaining skin peeled a way with a little work...

yay all happy again, but im going to try and keep it a little more humid than normal when it sheds next time and ill see how it works out

I have one chondro that never sheds well. I finally got a whole shed by pouring water into the substrate and really soaking it. Evidently the breeder was keeping them on water substrate and the regular humidity wasn't enough.

i was wondering about that.... since the bottom of my enclosure is acrylic and is sealed... could i just take the substrate out and put like a cm of water??? would that be ok, or just end up leading to problems?

I don't like having water as a substrate. I think it's dirty and if your chondro wants to go to ground (as several of mine do when they near shed) they can't. I would just super soak the substrate during the blue period, and then after shed, let it dry out again, or change it.

I mist my Aru ( type ) GTP every morning and make sure the vents are open; as for the layer of water on the bottom of the cage I would not advise it due to the probibility of upper resprsatory issues. When I mist mine I use reverse osmosis water or de-ionized and make sure to get it on him too so he'll drink from his coils in the event that he's too lazy to go to the water dish and get a drink. The humidity level is allways at or near 60%-80% with temp grad of 78 deg thru 85 deg.

I've NEVER had less then a full shed from him or any of my other species of snakes.

Good luck Greg

I mist mine everyday as well and all mine have perfect sheds except this one. I thought the first time that perhaps it was because the humidity levels weren't high enough. After the second one....I realized it was him. He goes blue and never clears up before shed. I think it's just something about him.

well i mist everyday, and i only have one small vent, but it still seems everything evaporates way too quickly, i think the small small crack around the edge of the hinge door may be the extra escape passage for the water, i might just cover the vent for a day and see how that works out

either way, i might go buy a misting unit and have it go off two times a day instead of manually doing it only once in the morning because i am at work during the night...
