What would go well in a palladarium?

tellus07 May 15, 2007 01:03 PM

I'm in the process of converting an old 125 gallon saltwater fish tank to a palladarium. If that's a term you've never previusly come upon, neither had I. In essence, it's a combination water and land environment. In my case, the design will include robust water flow, bio ball and cannister filtration, waterfalls, plants and branches. This will be a somewhat enclosed environment in that the tank will be covered by a slightly modified canopy that should be able to house both actinic and incadescent lights. With all this, I expect humidity to be high.

Although I have a long history of caring for lizards and amphibians, I'm going to be installing this in my company's office, and the individual in charge of primary care is a novice. With that in mind, I'm wondering what recommendations anyone might have for critters that might thrive in this unique setting. And please be assured that when all is said and done, I promise to post pictures of the final frontier. I think it's going to look pretty incredible, and hopefully someone will have good recommendations about what we should put in it.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Without knowing if my choices could coexist or not, if it was mine, I believe I would go with some newts (Spotted Eastern Newt, Chinese Fire-bellied Newt) in both, adult & elf stages. I'd also have another type of salamander or two, along with some poison dart frogs.

If a Day Gecko or some other gecko could coexist, I'd include one or two of them, as well.

Best wishes to ya! I can't wait to see the finished project.

Have a good one!

Thanks HH! Much appreciated, and I think pretty consistent where I'm starting to come out on this. Stay tuned.

You're quite welcome!

Other than concerns of coexisting, I'd be concerned that such a complex setup, which would be needed for a good display, could be a booger to maintain, basically, cleaning.

It probably wouldn't be too hard to spot-clean but might require a more often than usual total breakdown & clean. I think it would be worth the effort, though, and I think a novice could handle maintaining it.

You could post questions in a salamander and/or dart frog forum to find out about coexisting.

I've thought a lot about making a dart frog display for my home but nobody comes to visit me 'cause of my snakes. If they hear I've got poison dart frogs they'll think I've gone off the deep end, into voodoo or even cannibalism. LOL!

I'll try to follow you around so I can learn and see the progress.

Have fun!
