Li'l girl grows up...

CrimsonKing May 15, 2007 04:29 PM

Here she was last year. I did not attempt to breed her in'06.

and here she is as of just a few minutes ago..
She's looking in fine shape to lay..

Here's the male used. I got him from a guy because he ate his female, so I was apprehensive to say the least when putting her in with him.

I would have posted a pic of my VA female but she's due to lay any time now.

Mark,
are you breeding those or did you find them out and about?
Very nice, interesting too.

completely off topic for this forum, the eastern king I got from you is onto multiple fuzzies, really packing on the grams. Quite possibly one of my top 5 favorite kings of all time. Possibly by the time NRBE rolls around, I will get the motivation to snap a pic.

keep posting the good pics!

Dave if you're talking about the glass lizard, then yes I have them here. I road-cruised a few earlier in the year and had them here for pics. I figured she was gravid last month and just let her be. She's really a cool animal. But she also ate the albino cricket I was gonna photo...
Glad you like the king. I hope he gets as big as his dad.
There were a few great ones in his clutch.

Mark, at least raise one to see how long it takes to get to adulthood, they are awesome! I have a colony of 2.3 and expect some myself soon. Those should make excellant mole king spaghetti-o's! Post a pic of the hatchlings.

Wow... that male is brilliant! Are they FL locale? Either way great animals! Love to get a light colored hatchling calligaster to match up with my NC girl... BTW the 'glass lizard' posted below is great, exactly like the ones I used to see all the time as a youngster around here -- now considerably more sporadic. Good times.

Chris those are not from FL lines. I have FL ones too but may not get eggs this year...

What percent of your baby moles start on pinks right away? I have kept Catawba County mole kings for about 4 years now. I tried ground skinks/skink tails in the past to start them. Last year, I went to mouse tails to start them. Seems that they switch to pinks faster with mouse tails based on this limited experience.

People don't realize what aggressive feeders they can be when you offer something they want. I had a baby last year attack and constrict another baby just out of the egg and still in the egg box! Amazing! I offered a couple of small worm snakes and scented pinks with worm snake and that one started off right away for me.

Wish they were all that easy...

I'd say the average is more than 50% but that has varied between locales too. Also the more "f's", that is, the more generations removed from the wild, the better they seem to get started on rodents. So I hope these will get going quick as they are from a few generations of cb animals.
Like you said, skinks are a prime prey item and scenting just about anything with the saliva of a skink will get them going in most instances.
With these as with most of my snakes, I offer them a meal minutes out of the egg. The ones that take a pink upon hatching get a big star!*
