Rain, sweet rain!

MAD1975COW May 15, 2007 05:54 PM

Well, we were treated to a fairly good soaking through sunday night up till about noon on monday. So even Ian and I hit some ponds and back roads around Deland last night to see what we could find. We were treated to an explosion of activity. This first set is a southern toad and a couple of squirrel treefrogs calling.

We tromped through quite a bit of mud and weeds to come across herps on every shore. This second set includes a banded water snake, a green treefrog and some sort of snail. Ian spotted the snails in some hip-high grass, and I thought they looked cool so I threw a picture in.

There was alot of breeding going on. We had to shout to hear each other across the ponds. The calling very loud. Everywhere you stepped was frogs. Quite a few watersnakes were taking advantage. This next set includes some frogs in action. lol. Amplexus featuring: Cuban treefrogs, Southern toads, and Squirrel treefrogs.

This last set includes a Southern leopard frog on land, one in water, and another Squirrel treefrog. We saw alot more than I could share in these pics. Quite a few softshell turtles made an appearance, only to disappear when they saw my camera. The spring rains are finally starting to come. A very good start. Thank you again fellow herper Ian, I can't get anyone else to stay out so late on a work night. Happy herping all! TJ
