in 1992 Hwy. 277 hadn't been heavily collected and it was still possible to find decent sized snakes. 3' females were not a rarity. I was heading north and had just started to shine the cut north of Buffalo Creek when I saw this snake on the top eged of the cut, about 8' off the ground. I had to climb up a couple feet to grab him. Notice the white coming up from the belly onto the sides. When I saw him in the spotlight, white is pretty much all I noticed.
To give you an idea hof how fast an alterna can disappear, I grabbed the snake a bit back of mid-body and jumped off the ledge I was standing on. When I hit the ground I pulled the snake torward me to get a closer look and in that second or two he already had his head, neck and part of the body into a hole in the cut.
He was 44" or a shade over.
