Am I the only one.....

coluberking25 May 16, 2007 04:20 PM

...who really has nothing good going for me??? I see all these posts about babies being born and new snakes....I have no way of getting babies as I don't have a pair. No more snakes until later in life, and none of these new snakes are CRBs!!!!!

Plus wildfires and t-storms ruining my plans to hunt for northern black racers.

Don't think I'm depressed or anything! I'm quite content!

By the way...new Rocky(not Rochelle, Bob.....R-O-C-K-Y ) pics coming up soon! You want me to post pics of my recent herp findings in the field too? Let me know!

no worries friend i'm in the same boat as you. i only have one CRB and very soon now my girlfriend will move into her new apartment that allows pets so she'll take her corn to live with her

it is kind of sad not seeing more pictures of CRBs on this forum, seeing as they are the better snake i would expect more. i'll try to remedy this over the summer when i have some form of income and get a camera.

we'll just have to band together you and i and find others who are in the same boat as we are.

I would love to see more of you guys' CRB photos! There was a cute little CRB at the place where I got Loki, but I couldn't bring them both home, alas! It would be very nice to have one of each.
(Loki's my new BRB, with no more snakes on the horizon for a very long, long time... and all three of my serpents are male, so I'm not expecting any exciting baby arrivals either!)

Renee

Oh, well. Love the ones you've got!

I thought I had PICs of a CRB litter but so far I cannot find them. While looking for them I will post any CRB PICs that I come across for my CRB lovin pals here. This first one is my male. I got him as a baby at the second (1991) National Reptile Breeders Expo in Orlando. And Scott, warm spring time thunderstorms are a great time for snake hunting. Hurricanes are even better. If you don't have law enforcement telling you to stay off the roads because of the weather you are not hunting hard enough.

This female was caught night hunting on a jungle trail in 1989 in Panama. The PIC was taken in 2004.

Jeff Clark May 16, 2007 08:36 PM

PIC was posted several years ago by Bill Szymanski. Leucistic CRB?

Jeff Clark May 16, 2007 08:40 PM

I am pretty sure this is Ricardo's original amelanistic CRB taken soon after he got it. The PIC was in my old PICs so if I identified the PIC incorrectly I apologize.

We have had lots of recent posts on this forum about Bci morphs. I like Surinams better because even when they get big they are beautiful. This one is about half grown at 5.5 feet in length.

did your female Suri take this year or what?
Bob

Jeff Clark May 16, 2007 09:49 PM

Bob,
...Both big females are still being courted and bred. My best guess is that cooling temperatures were not right for the males and they are shooting blanks. We had so much warm weather all through the winter that cooling was tough to control. Does not seem to have caused a problem with the Rainbows though.

What happened in the previous years if you don't mind me asking cuz I have only been KS member for 7 months or so and read a couple times that they didn't take. Were they courted and bred in the previous years and shot blanks or just simply not horny enough or cooling issues again? Thanks for the info ahead of Jeff and best of luck with the BRB's this season too cuz you have many many females
Bob

Jeff Clark May 16, 2007 10:52 PM

Bob,
..Last year the largest female was courted by one of the males but I never saw breeding. This year the same male and another male have both bred with both of my females. One of the females and both of the males are probably totally mature this year. My largest female has probably been mature for a couple of years now. My oldest (1998) male seems totally uninterested in all this. I suppose I will sell him to someone as pet.

I remember that picture. I believe the post that accompanied it said it was CRB too.
Do you know if it was ever bred and proven inheritable?

Jeff Clark May 17, 2007 09:16 AM

Jason,
...I think I remember something about it dying.

Wow, that is really too bad. It is always dissapointing to hear about that becoming the fate of wild caught animals in captivity, makes it even worse when it is a wild caught one of a kind morph. If I remember correctly the Pearl Boa bci morph was a wild caught that died in captivity too. That was another real cool looking one too.

T-Storms=Potential Death

As you probably know...you have a better chance of dying from a lightning strike than than getting bit by a rattlesnake or getting torn to shreds by an alligator.

Wildfires=Death

There are no racers around my own house to find, so I have to drive around to other locations. I planned on going to the Pine Barrens to find some racers, but due to wildfires that have now grown out of control.

The other location, that field, may not be occupied by racers, as you told me previously, but those woods around it sure have potential, especially considering there is tons of junk to hide under and a nearby pond where bullfrogs, green frogs, and gray treefrogs breed. But again there was a T-storm and it lasted all night. And today, I slept in so I didn't get to go. One of these days....hopefully Friday or Saturday, I'll be able to get up early to go herpin' there!

Scott,
..I forgot to mention hunting around fires in my earlier post. When I was young my brother and I were the local Fire Departments biggest arson suspects because we always showed up at woods fires to hunt snakes. When the smoke is right it will really move the snakes.

...I'll probably be prevented from going and apparently the snakes have burrows to hide in...according to the newspaper...but hey...you can't believe it till you see it.
