Reatempting Ball Pythons-Advice Anyone?

snunior May 16, 2007 11:32 PM

Hello
My name is Jesse and I am now 15 years old. I got into ball pythons when i was about 13. I thought i did enough research on them. I bought a Ball python at the white plains show which i believe was imported. However it might not have been. The thing is i bought him from a non reliable source because the snake was cheap. I tooke him to the vet and he was in great health. I took care of him for 4 months until he died and we are still not sure why. I hope to buy another ball python from a "RELIABLE" source this time. I would like to know if anyone has any suggestion of how i can do things better this go around. I will really appreciate the help.

Thanks, Jesse

Where is the White Plains show? I've heard the name but I cant remember. Anyway if you look in the classifieds there are a lot of people selling CB babys just check some of them out. If they say CH or anything like that you might want to stay away from. Just find someone that hatched them out themselves and get one of those and is eating good and you should be fine.

sorry for ur lose ! i also bought a BP from a white plains show about 3 yrs ago and she 2 died about a month later. i was still learning, jus excited to having them. but she wasnt my 1st, i had bought 2 before from the expo. at the time i wasnt into breeding n checking who the breeders are. i jus wanted a pet. since then, i learn even more, alot through forums, books, magazines & internet. the end of 06, i wanted to deal with breeding, 07 i began my search. i wanted reliable breeders, some1 that can always be there in case i have a question or 2. in march & april of this yr, i have bought 2 female pastels & 1 male 100%Het clown. i bought both my pastels from Kim from N.A.R.C. her & her fiance have been very helpful 2 me. i have sent over 50 emails back & forth on breeding & general information, bout the pastel i have purchased. very good breeders. RELIABLE ! they have been so good 2 me, that i have a spider & cinny that im going to be purchasing from them in the near future. not knock any other breeders, jus my 1st time dealing with alot of $$$, breeders & trust. my advice is ask alot of questions, when u do that, espically at the expo u can tell who knows their stuff, all on the way they reply to ur answers. i have asked ?'s n their answer sound like a bunch of B.S. (money hungry). ill be going to the nexx expo i believe in July... good thing to get is the magazines ! there is a old lady & guy that sells magazines at the show for 3 or 4 for $10. i make sure i go to them everytime & buy all their magazines of BPs. even if its a small article, i til get it. if u have ne questions feel free to email me.
Good Luck

My biggest piece of advice for successfully keeping ball pythons as pets -- research their care information from reliable sources and don't skimp on the equipment you need to properly house them. That means appropriate enclosure, heat source(s), thermostat, digital thermometers, hides, and substrate. People that have issues with their ball pythons can almost always attribute it to some kind of poor husbandry or lack of proper equipment...they think they can leave something out and "save money", but in the end the snake suffers.

I agree with the Blake, get yourself a nice captive bred baby that has been eating regularly and is in good health. Good luck this time around!

I would make sure you have everything set up properly, temps, humidity, before you get your new snake. As far as breeders I got a really nice bp from www.jnjreptiles.com he eats like a pig and in my book is perfect in every way and I would not hesitate to buy another from them. Best of luck
