Sonoran Herp Spots

ZIF May 17, 2007 01:03 AM

Greetings All-

I am visiting friends in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico and want to see some herps. I am an East Coast herp person so dont know too much about when and where to herp here in the desert. Can anyone let me on to any secrets you may have for herping in this area? I am planning on camping in the Pinacate Reserve and maybe at Organ Pipe Cactus Monument on the way back north. Any tips on when, where, and how to look would be much appreciated! I know road cruising is the big thing, but there are few paved roads to cruize safely here at night.. will sand roads produce anything??

Be real careful in Organ Pipe...I would not even impede an animals progress on the road. I lived in AZ for 5 years and never herped OP due to laws...an old timer and friend(now gone) Tom Taylor used to say that area was good for triv trivs if those interest you. Heck seeing any rosy in the wild is cool. this time of year in az can be good road cruising almost anywhere and if you are from east coast any find should be cool. i still like finding atrox and those are quite common...good luck and buy an az hunting license if you plan to keep anything.
