What is the best way to send a live baby rat intended as a pet from 1 coast to the other? Fedex priority overnight?
What kind of chew-proof cage would it require for shipping?
Tx

I can't answer your question. I'm not trying to hijack your thread, but you must have a very special rat if someone is willing to pay that much shipping for it.
Also, will any of the carriers even ship a live rat (legally I mean)?

Yes, lol. It's a gift.
I know zero about shipping these critters.
....not legal......I forget if it's Delta that is actually legal....too much cash to send live stuff....
....rats are available all over the world.......
......legal if it was frozen?

I used to breed gerbils as pets, and at the time shipping them was illegal. I don't think you're allowed to ship mammals. I don't know if the rules have changed since then, but I would be careful. I know lots of breeders who shipped their rodents labeled as reptiles, but it seemed like the shipping companies really started cracking down on this.
Hope this helps,
Shelly
I have shiped live rodents but the only way i know how to do it legally is through Delta at the airport. I shipped a bunch of jerboas last year from RI to FL and it cost $150 to do so. I know it is illegal with FEDEX to ship live rodents, i would assume UPS would have the same policy but could be wrong. If you call your local airport and ask for delta cargo they will either fax you or go over everything you need to do. When i shipped they needed to be in a chew proof- exscape proof cage. Regular tecs normally work fine that is what i used. You also need to have food and water in the cage with the animal, i used apple slices and rodent food and they were ok with that. The only other downfall is you would need someone on the other end to be able to pick up the rat at the airport.
Hope any of this helps
Thanks Kim
Looks like baby Rexy will be staying here.
Tx for all the info. Had no idea it would be so involved.
Maybe a beanie baby rat is in order, lmao!
LOL that is high shipping for a rat. Maybe call local pet shops to where want to send it and see if they have what you wanted to send.
i cant even imagine teh stink of when that rat arrived anyway.
it'd prolly be standing in a half inch of its own poo with how those things are
Yeah! Stinky for sure, haha. They have an inch of poop just from the ride home from the store or even after 10 mins in their exercise ball on the floor.
I bred my pet black rex rat & this is her 5 week old white rex son.
Thought I'd send him to a friend & spread the love. Oh well.

Too cute.. I can see why you wanted to share the love. I guess you just have to keep it..
