Tank Size?

eminart May 17, 2007 02:25 AM

How long can a beardie live in a 29gal tank? And what size enclosure does an adult need? I've never had a bearded dragon so I don't know much about them, but I am becoming interested in them. I'm going to a show this weekend and I know I'll want to buy something. I just want to know what I'm capable of housing before I buy a new reptile.

If you get a 6" Beardie a 29 Gal. will maybe last a month. The minimum recommended size for an adult Beardie is 4 x 2 floor space.

depends on the floor space of the 29gal tank. If it has more floor space than height or width then the tank may be fine for a couple months.

I suggest you do plenty of research on bearded dragons and bearded dragon care before buying a bearded dragon. These dragons, though not hard to care for, do require very specific needs in husbandry. Adults will grow anywhere between 18-24", thus they need a cage, as BDLvr pointed out, at least 4'x2' in floor space, if not more.

For care and cage requirements, I usggest reading all the posts on this forum on teh first page, most will answre all the commonly asked questions, provide good links to care sheets and other benefical information about bearded dragons. A google search for bearded dragon caresheets will bring out hundreds of websites. I suggest reading a few dozen to better prepare yourself before buying your dragon.

Thanks for the info. I knew they required more space than the 29 gal tank. I just didn't know how fast they'd grow out of it. I'm actually a fairly experienced herp keeper. I've kept ball pythons, green iguanas, brown basilisks, collared lizards, speckled kingsnakes, more geckos than I can remember, tiny ringedneck snakes, box turtles, snapping turtles, sliders, musk turtles, mud turtles, gray rat snakes, eastern hognosed snakes, rough green snakes, dekay's snakes, banded water snakes, blacksnakes (racers), firebelly toads, american toads, bullfrogs, leopard frogs, green tree frogs, gray tree frogs, and various newts and salamanders in my younger years. That's just what I can remember offhand. I currently have a leopard gecko, an egyptian tortoise, and ten ball pythons. Sorry, I was enjoying trying to remember all my former pets.............. Anyway, I'm pretty well versed on the in's and out's of reptile care including the UVB that beardies need and calcium/D3 etc. I've just never owned a bearded dragon. Rest assured though, when I do buy one, I'll do plenty of reading and be well prepared.

I'll probably use the 29gal tank for something else since it wouldn't last long for a dragon. I'm thinking I'll either start a breeding colony of leopard geckos or maybe move one of my ball pythons into it. ............anyway, I'm rambling.........

Thanks for the info!
