Bad news...

medyssa May 17, 2007 01:53 PM

unfortuantely my mom accidentally left the container that some of the babies were in open just a smidgen and two escaped. Despite two hours of rummaging through my laundry room in search of them I found no trace. I didnt even get an hour with the babies all to myself before something bad happened.
It looks bleak but I cant help but hope.

Jess,
...I apologize for misposting and cluttering up your thread.
...When I have had little BRBs escape they often do not travel far at first but hole up in the smallest darkest place they can squeeze into. Look in places that you think they cannot get into.

Jess, you have my sympathies! But don't give up hope.
Have you tried luring them out with warm pinkies? (If they haven't eaten since birth, I know that may not work...)

Keep looking and, set up a damp moss box hide with a heating pad underneath. You want to make a place for them to go to which is perfect for them, could get lucky and they find their way to the hide.

For any "less experienced" folks reading or lurking:

Having a snake escape can be a hard learned lesson, snakes can and will escape with the slightest opportunity. There are really only three possible outcomes from an escapee.

1) You find it and it's OK (the most hoped but low probability outcome)

2) You find it and it's either sick or worse.

3) You never see it again.

One of my customers from last year had two babies escape within a week of each other. The second one to escape was the first found and it was in really bad shape and did not make it. The first to escape was also found and was none the worse for it's adventure. It must have found a nice warm place to hide. Point being don't give up!!

100% secure caging/containers are a must and dilligence in closing/securing is extremely important.

Several years ago I had less secure shoeboxes that babies would escape from every once in a while. Fortunately for me, the shoeboxes were stacked in another cage and they never got out of that one but I would find an empty shoebox from time to time and then have to search through the stacks looking for the escaped baby. One time a baby even managed to slip through a small gap between two sections and was found hanging out with a 10 foot plus boa constrictor. Quite a funny sight since the baby was OK.

I already set up a little hide box but I have been at work all day and cant check. Fortunately I dont have to work this weekend so I can search for them.
Also, thanks Dave for the post for newbies about escaping. You're really good at presenting that so informatively.

A BABY BRB CAN GO 6 MONTHS WITHOU A MEAL BUT NOT EVEN 6 DAYS WITHHOUT WATER. I suggest putting a water dish along each wall of the house. although you may not find the snake soaking in the bowl one morning, if they find the water, you will have longer to find a healthy snake. imo this is much more important than the moist hides (sorry Dave), but you can do both. or better yet, put bowls in the moist hide boxes you place AT THE EDGES OF EACH WALL.

GOOD LUCK.

Was focussed on finding it rather than helping it to survive on it's own.

Ah so sorry to hear. best of luck to you and the little guys!

qiksilver5 May 17, 2007 05:04 PM

sorry to hear it, I'm sure you looked everywhere but maybe try under the machines again if its in the laundry room.

Jeff Clark May 17, 2007 08:50 PM

Unplug the washer and dryer and pop the tops off of them (usually secured along one adge with spring clips) and look down into the mechanism. Little snakes love to crawl up inside the machinery of a washer or dryer. Been there, done that, and more than once.

I would have washed and killed a young jungle carpet escapee if it were not for me taking out the darks to wash a load of whites. check bathtubs as well... I dont know how little snakes do It, but they can get anywhere.
best of luck.bhh

Everyone will not like this story, but oh well.

About 4 years ago while I was in college, I got drunk and took all of my snakes out at once.

2 Ball Pythons
2 Corn Snakes
1 Red Tail Boa
1 Colombian Rainbow Boa

I passed out with them on my bed and their cages left open. Needless to say, I woke up the next morning wondering what happened.

It took me 2 days of searching and my roommates swearing that if I don't find everyone of them, to find a new home before I did.

I got everyone of them back.

They were in the following locations...

One curled up under my neck
One under my pillow
One in the top drawer of my dresser with my socks on the other end of my room
One in a shoe in my closet
One in the A/C vent in the hall
The last guy was behind the computer on the otherside of the house.

I was young and stupid then, I've learned quite alot about snakes and alcohol since then.

I think my success came in that I actually laid on the floor to get a "snake's eye view" of what everything looked like and I followed their starting place to small cracks, dark corners and warm spots.

My one piece of advice would be to make sure that any possible ways out of your room/house are sealed off. If kept indoors, it's almost certain you'll find them. Seal up an holes, cracks, etc. Also, when you look at things lying down on the floor you find so many nooks and crannies and holes that you didn't even know existed!

Good Luck!
