Snake found in Moab, Utah

RavenSkyfire May 18, 2007 02:48 AM

My husband recently took a trip to Moab(don't remember precisely what part though). He found this snake while out on one of the trails. He said it wasn't aggressive or stressed out by being handled. They held it long enough to take a couple of pics and then it was safely released to go about it's business.

What kind of snake is this?

That is a garter snake, most likely Thamnophis elegans vagrans, the wandering garter.

That's a wandering garter, thamnophis elegans vagrans, common throughout Utah. Totally harmless.

I figured that it was something really common. Thank you both for letting me know what snake it is.
