New World Old World Breeding

Trolligans May 18, 2007 04:43 PM

Has anyone ever bred a Texas Rat with any of the Old World Species? If so, what species and what kinds of colors/patterns did you get. I'm interested in starting a breeding project but didn't want to by a bunch of snakes that are not capable of cross-breeding.

Lot's have tried but I've never heard of anyone succeeding. It's most likely because they are not as closely related as new world rats are to other new world colubrids like kings, milk, and bulls which can and have produced hybrids.

Yeah, they're not even in the same Colubrid tribe. All of the NW hybrids are from the same tribe, Lampropeltini. There are no old world colubrids in those tribes, and though there are plenty of intergeneric hybrids, I've never heard of intertribal hybrids.

Some New world and Old world ratsnakes have been hybridized quiet a few times in captivity .. there's been a couple of threads on here if you do a search in the archives. I've never done it myself so can't give you first hand experience but a friend bred elaphe schrencki, the russian rat with an evergaldes ratsnake and went on to produce F2's .. also heard of Cornsnake X E.schrencki, cornsnake x E.climacophora, I believe Larry Keller fom Prairieland herps did the later, a reptile store in the UK has some guttatus x climacophora for sale produced by a local breeder. An european zoo (Moscow?) has attempted a few hybridizations of various genus can't actually recall which ones but they wrote up a paper on there experiements but as yet I've been unable to locate a copy. May be someone else has read that and can comment further ?

Last year I would have sworn a Ball Python x Woma wouldn't have been possible, but NERD did it.

Do you know of any links to any articles or pictures of these. All I can find are old posts on KS about it.

The last thing I saw on the KS want ads was a climacophora/corn-snake hybrid last year that I believe was offered by Prarieland Herps.

Don't know if there's much interest in owning these crosses but it's interesting to know they can hybridize.

John
