River Road

twilightfade212 May 18, 2007 10:10 PM

I was looking at the Alterna page and love the looks of the River Road alterna. But I saw the note about the controversy about collecting here. I was just curious how much that still holds up and if anyone still hunts here. River Road seems to be a popular topic, so it seems like there is still a lot of activity still going on there.

The river road is a public road. Some of the locals, as well as TPWD feel that they control parts of it, but they don't.
However, there is a lot of drug trafficing down there so expect to see a lot of drug cops.

The alterna page needs to be updated. I've spoken with Alpine Game Warden Ray Spears several times about this subject, and he agrees that so long as you don't get off the road, its ok to collect along the river road and its right of way - because its a public, not a park, road.

However, like John mentions, with the "homeland security" issues, there is a lot of border patrol, local sheriff, dea, etc presence there in recent years. Expect to be pulled over - and if you see any sort of LE, I'd make a point to stop and let them know that you're snake hunting - I did last year (local sheriff's deputy) and all was cool.
