so far a good year for field collecting

valleyrattler77 May 19, 2007 01:21 AM

we had a pretty mild winter in Cali, and the early sun has brought out the snakes. to date i have collected 1 calking, 1 pacific gopher, catch and release many garters of three species, and 4 northern pacific rattlers. 17" rattler-proof boots courtesy of cabellas, standard "gentle giant" tongs courtesy of MidwestTongs, homemade flipping stick/hook courtesy of me, fresh air blueskies warm days courtesy of California, and a pillow case full of snakes to catch courtesy of Mother Nature. This area seems to be literally crawling with gophers and garters. With a little persistence the kings are found. And some areas you gotta watch your step for the rattlers. Oh and last years pair of rattlesnakes has already mated and the female looks like she did when I caught her last june(by august I had 11 little baby rattlers to find in her cage(not fun). And I wont even tell about the skinks, bluebellies and alligator lizards I have snared with my fishing pole noose. I know the warm weather is making it easy on me, but it still entertains me almost every weekend and many evenings. You just never know what will be under the next log.
