Gopher's mouth not completely shutting

skronkykong May 19, 2007 04:54 AM

My big male gopher's mouth isn't shutting all the way on one side. It happens from time to time but usually goes back to normal. Lately its staying open just a bit. He does have a very small head for being over 5 feet. I never feed him anything bigger than an adult mouse. Anyone else have this problem?

What kind of bedding are you keeping him on? I keep my Pituophis on aspen bedding, but I still have to be careful around feeding time....sometimes a piece of aspen can get lodged in the snakes' mouth, causing distress to the snake. You might want to take your snake out and examine his mouth....he might have a piece of bedding stuck in there somewhere....If left untreated for long enough, it could abcess and then you've got other problems....

Good luck...

Actually just it went back to normal, like it has been before. So I dunno.

Do what azatrox said. I have also seen where a snake's jaws will become misaligned (for lack of a better word), and after a few hours they yawn and get it back. But I would take a peek for a piece of bedding just to make sure.
