Texas Indigos < the Law>

BigJim55 May 19, 2007 11:34 AM

A person on Kingsnake is selling Texas Indigos and states that they are not protected and can be sold legally, I emailed him twice without response. My question is, is it possible for someone in Florida to buy and purchase Texas Indigos without any problems? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide, Jim Elliott

texas indigos are protected in texas by state/environmental law. commerce with legal specimens is not a problem outside that state. that said, I would have a conversation with your local environmental law officers and let them know that you plan on acquiring erebennus. make sure they know how to tell the difference between erebennus and couperi and always have all documentation available to avoid being set up like a bowling pin.
not be paranoid, but if it looks like a duck and acts like a duck in duck habitat, you have to prove its a goose... or a roadrunner...
just my $.01 worth

Hey Jim,
I live in St. Lucie County Florida. I have a female Texas Indigo I got from Dean Alessandrini in Ohio. She is spectacular. As a founding member of the local herp society, I try to bring her to the meeting as much as possible. Since I didn't want to go through the permit hassle for an Eastern, the Texas was a excellent choice. I needed NO paperwork of any kind.
I do keep a scale diagram and two macro shots, one of an Eastern, and the other a Texan... to show anyone who may inquire about what the differences... I've not had a problem. The side-by-side comparison I made in photoshop makes IDing easy.

I say go for it dude. They are great snakes.
Good luck.
Justin

I live in Palm Beach County. The Texas are on my list of future snakes.
