Plant question

mastiffgrrl May 19, 2007 12:42 PM

Hi all....I heard everyone talking about pothos plants for the cages, so I went out and bought one! Now I'm not sure if it's okay...

This is the one that I got:
http://www.gflora.com/index.php?cmd=genus_body&genus_id=50

It's called a scindapsus pictus and was identified as a pothos, which it isn't....

Does anyone have any experience with these and chams? I don't want to put it in until I know it's ok, but he needs something cause he's trying to eat the silk plants!

Thanks,
D

This is the pothos plant that I use...
http://www.pothos.com/

You can also use hibiscus.

On this list scindapsus pictus is listed as toxic....

Thanks for your help on both questions

Do your chams nibble on those leaves? If they do, then I should be fine with the one I have.....they are both listed as the same type of "poison." It must just be humans that they affect!

Thanks,
D

You asked..."Do your chams nibble on those leaves?"...some of the veileds nibble on them and some strip the plant almost bare of leaves.

You said..."If they do, then I should be fine with the one I have.....they are both listed as the same type of "poison." It must just be humans that they affect!"...what poison are you saying they both have? Oxalates? Whatever is supposed to be in the pothos that I use, doesn't seem to harm the veileds. I have used those plants for years and raised/hatched/kept a lot of veileds during that time that live(d)to a ripe old age.

This site says the one I use in my cages has calcium oxalate crystals....and..."TOXIC ONLY IF LARGE QUANTITIES EATEN. CAUSES SEVERE PAIN IN THE MOUTH IF EATEN! SKIN IRRITATION MINOR, OR LASTING ONLY FOR A FEW MINUTES."
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Epiprau.htm

I couldn't find a site that told what the toxin is in the one you were saying you have (scindapsus pictus).

Thanks so much for your help...I gave the plant one last bath, and put it in there with him today.

I couldn't find anywhere where it said what "poison" was in my plant either.... just that it was listed on a couple of sites, but nothing official from what I could tell. I assume that because the two are closely related, it's probably oxalates as well.

I'm going to post some pics of him and his cage on another thread. Take a look and let me know what you think!
