This one was half way up a hill in the Spokane, WA area. Any way to identify what type it is?

That is quite clearly a Northern Pacific rattlesnake....doesn't surprise me that the rattles are gone, as it appears the snake has been "rednecked"....Too bad too, as it appeared (at one time) to be a pretty good lookin' animal too....

Crotalus oreganus is the only species of rattlesnake native to WA.

SDeFriez May 20, 2007 01:40 AM

True it was a a Northern pacific rattlesnake, probably killed for it's rattle by rednecks. Look at the markings, no way was it a gopher. What a loss!

NWFLHerper May 20, 2007 09:41 AM

Could be, or the rattles could have been cut off by someone who found it already dead. My guess is that most snakes are run over by people who never even stop.

SDeFriez May 20, 2007 12:54 PM

I've seen this so many times(seeing snakes run over for no reason) it always makes my stomach turn no matter what type of of snake they were..........SICK!

Snakes being killed on the asphalt is a common tragedy. Even if someone does not like them snakes still have their place in the environment. There are of course some unavoidable accidents but many drivers will intentionally swerve, not to avoid the snake, but to hit it. I always travel with a snake hook in the back of my vehicle. I have potentially spared quite a number of snakes this fate.

Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I've seen a big atrox dead in the middle of the road with it's head and rattle removed....there is no end to the ignorance....
