Femoral pore FELL OUT!

zillamonster May 19, 2007 04:05 PM

hi, my male iguana Zilla is about 7 years old and has big thick femoral pores. well apparently one of the biggest ones (closer to his body) started sticking out more than the others recently and just now i was taking him from the bath to his cage and set him down only to see the big nasty thing just slide right out! i nearly threw up and i still have a lump in my throat, but now i have this big nasty femoral plug with a bit of blood on the end and a big gaping hole in his thigh where it belonged (also with a bit of blood, but it isn't as if blood is steadily coming out). obviously i'm concerned, but is my concern necessary? i've never heard of such a thing so i did a google search and came up with a page ( http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steve.woodward/femoral.html ) that seems to suggest it's somewhat common and usually not a concern. i'll keep a good eye on it but i'd like the advice of some people here, maybe some of you have experienced this and could tell me what to look for or at the very least maybe this could serve as a reference for others in case it happens to them. thanks!

The link you put in says it doesnt exist, so I cant comment on that. I havent had my iggy for long, but I've always been of the opinion, if in doubt, take to the vet. Better than safe than sorry!

well my husband and i had many fights over this, i always thought if it fell out on its own, keep an eye on it but its ok, he swears his herp vet told him it was good to try to get them out! if i rember correctly, its just a waxy discharge that is used for sent marking in the wild and the plug falling out while creapy looking isnt an emregency, but if it looks infected or the bleeding continues id get it checked out by a vet! if anyone knows anything difffrent id love to hear opinions, we only learn by sharing info!!

also try posting on the herp health forum, someone there may know something newer then me on this, its been a while for me and male iggys

... keep it clean, keep it disinfected, keep an eye on it. Should not be a big deal, If things start getting ugly, go to vet. Like Po said, it is basically just a waxy substance.

The femoral pores secrete an exudate that resembles a wax stick. In nature they drag their hind legs to mark their territory and these often fall out. It is absolutely normal and NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. Tom Crutchfield
