way back in the dark ages, probably '76 of '77, Johnny Binder, a couple other Waco herpers and I were standing around Chamberlains in the afternoon, BSing and killing time, when a German pulled up. He had been going to college in CA and was heading to NY to fly home, herping his way across the country. He was particularly interested in the smaller rattlers. I, having found maybe 4-5 lepidus in my life at this point, was an instant "expert" and asked the other guys if they were interested in lepidus, to which they replied "Sure." I told them to meed me at around 8PM and we would go find some.
I took them up Pandale dirt to Harkell Draw, where we parked and got out of our cars. I took them into Harkell a few hundred yards to where the limestone walls started building up a bit. I then pointed out some holes near the ground and told them that around this time of day the lepidus would be coming out to bask and this was a good place to look.
The Germsn said "Vell, I tink maybe I go look farder down ver der ar bigger rhocks." I told him that this is where he wanted to be looking. He said that he would go looking farder down in de bigger rhocks. I said "Dammit, right HERE is is where you want to look" and pointed down at my feet. Darned if there wasn't a lepidus crawling right between my feet.
I picked it up with a hook and the German said "Here, I is being taking that for my bag." I told him what he could do with his bag and suggested dat he hunt ver der were bigger rhocks.
