Update on Irwin's parasite problem

the nerve Aug 15, 2003 12:34 PM

A few weeks ago I posted a message asking on advice on my bearded dragon's diarrea problem. The stool sample showed no signs of any parasites, and his diet is perfectly fine with a mix of crickets, mealworms, and healthy greens and veggies. Well, I took him to the vet and the vet prescribed 10 mg of Flagyl with 10 mg of Panacure. This treatment did wonders for Irwin and now he has firm poop that doesn't smell, every 2-4 days instead of every day. So he must have had parasites that didn't show up in the stool sample, but now they're gone and he's as vigorous as ever. He even gained weight, he's 498 grams instead of 470. He's a big boy...

What was the medication for? Did the vet suspect a parasite even though none showed up on the test?

Glad to hear your little one is doing well!

If I recall correctly, Panacure is an anti-worm medication, and the Flagyl is an anti-protozoan medication. Both of us suspected parasites, because of his frequent, runny, smelly poop. However nothing showed up on the fecal, but he said many parasites (especially protozoans) can be hard to detect, so he recommended treatment anyway. He also said that the good gut flora would not be harmed. He must have been right because the treatment worked very well.

Hope this helps,

andy
