Albino black rat question ?

dinodon May 20, 2007 05:52 AM

Iv'e been offred a pair of ABRS, I don't live in the US so they not cheep. I live in a tropical climate, just wondering if they will breed with out winter cooling? I'm having no trouble breeding my kings , corns and milks with out cooling.
I know it's better to cool but it's not an option right now, I want those snake but only if I stand any chanece of breeding them.

Thank you.

If your corns do it then your rats should.

Black rats being from more northern climates will probably require a reasonable amount of cooling to be fertile. That's not to say that it would be impossible, but I really don't think they are anywhere near as likely to breed with no cooling or just "a little" cooling as corns are. Duffy

Do you know where the black rats came from? Perhaps if they are from a southern area, they wouldn't need cooling? Say Florida or Georgia? Do black rats come down that far south?

In the summer, I keep my black rats at room temp. In the winter, I give them a heat pad. No cycling. And mine bred last year, and my female is gravid now.

There's a slight temperature difference.. mostly, at nights, the temps do drop to the mid/high 60s, and daylight does change. But, it's enough for mine.

From what you have described, it is a temperature cycle. And your snakes probably experience a light cycle = shorter days in Winter.

Although every caresheet says 55 deg during Winter, the reality is that even a minor cooling cycle, depending on the species or even individual animals in question, may produce favorable results.

For example, that many rosyboas will produce young with just a night time temp drop as long as there is a light-cycle - just keep them dark in Winter.
