Fatty Ratty ? repost

Trilum_Trelis May 20, 2007 11:05 AM

Sorry to repost but Please if anyone can give some advise it would be much apreciated.

Hi
iv been told that a 100% rat diet can cause liver problems due to the very high fat content, my adult pueblan milk will only accept Rats so im a bit worried, iv tried scenting washed mice with rat but she knows the difference and compleatly refuses them.
am i worrying to much ?, also if a 100% rat diet causes problems what can i do to get her to accept mice.

i would love to hear everyones opinions on feeding rats v mice or mice v rats.
i just want to feed my pueblan whats best without any health implications down the road.
My Pueblan is adult.
Thankyou
Trilum

Im not 100% but i think any fat issues with rats are going to be with a 100% diet of rat pups, rat pups are virtualy a bag of fat.

As far as scenting, start with only a tiny rub of mouse scent on a rat then slowly working up to a heavy scented rat. ( wash the rats first ).

give it a month of just minimal scenting, a month of a bit more and so on until your Pueblan gets used to it, even try leaving a mouse next to the rat each time you feed,it should help with the transition.

For the hell of it i tried a pinky, now im an addict and eat at least 5 a week. Its strange but when you get used to them they taste like eggs.

That's correct... Rat pups do contain more fat than an adult mouse.. but, as long as your snake is taking rats that are running around (or once able to run around) you should be fine..
