Safety of UV Heat (mercury vapor) bulbs

iwana Aug 15, 2003 01:02 PM

Hi everyone,

I would like your opinion on this article written by Melissa Kaplan. I've seen it before a while back (before I even got started with chameleons), but ended up finding it again and took the time to read it. Here is the link:

So do mercury vapor bulbs really produce such dangerous amounts of UVB? As far as the Powersuns go, I have to say I'm really disappointed. I burned two bulbs within a few months and it doesn't produce nearly as much heat as a regular incandescent bulb. The 160W Powersun produced about as much heat as the 75W basking light I'm currently using until I get another UVB bulb.

Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Julie, Justin and Frasier.

I lost some 160w T-Rex lamps with just one drop of water on them. So no watter can go close. Also it could be the fixture you use.

And you might have a model designed to create heat on a precise spot, and not flood the enclosure.
