My first fatality

fastjunkie May 20, 2007 09:13 PM

To my disbelief,I just found my 8 month old Jaya dead in the bottom oh his cage today.Don't know what happened.I fed him yesterday and just today I found him and a regurged fuzzy.I don't believe it was too big of a meal for him to regurge and die. It's what I've been feeding him for the last few months and he's been doing fine.Up until today he was doing excellent. No recent signs of any illness.Any thoughts anybody?

Unfortunately it happens. I've heard of this happening more than once in both cbb and fb animals. A necropsy might tell you what happened, but it might not. It might be worth it to know. Keep the body in the fridge if you plan on a necropsy, not the freezer. Very sorry to hear about your loss.

Thanx Meg.Unfortunatly, this is the little Jaya I got from Frantz Herp over the winter. It was well on it's way to being a stunner.I just can't help but to think I could of prevented this. It's hard to believe that on Sat I had a healthy snake and on Sun it just dies.It showed no signs if illness or stress at all, even when I fed him.

Meg is correct on necropsy being the only way to know.

It might be worth knowing that internal parasite problems can express this way - waiting for visual problems as is common in other snakes is often too late in GTP's. Not sure if you ever did a fecal or preventative worming regimen.

Sorry about your loss - I'd definetly ask Frantz what they think.

I would too. He's generally very good about getting with you about stuff. Give him a buzz and see what he has to say.

Thanx all,I may just do that. And please,I am in no way blaming this on Frantz Herp. They are a stand up buisness. The only reason I even mentioned them is because I know Meg bought a Jaya from them as well. But,I still can't help but to think it was something to do with feeding him.Usually if a condro has parasites or something to that extent, wont they show signs of illness for weeks or even months? This little guy was great on Sat. and dead on Sun.Like I said,I've heard of people feeding too large of a meal and feeding it to death, but the fuzzy I fed him wasn't too big.It was a f/t,vould it maybe have been an old fuzzy? The fuzzy(f/t)was probably only about 4 months old.

I've heard of sudden death right after the animal is fed and acting normally. I've heard of several people that has happened to. Some were imports, some were cbb. Some never were able to tell what the problem was.I think my Jaya is a year older than yours right?
