Went to my first reptile show

BRB_Russ May 21, 2007 09:21 AM

Well i wanted to prepare myself for the upcoming Datona show so i went to my first show in Orlando! It was a lot of fun but i have to say i was disapointed, there were only like 25 vendors . . . and i've been to gun and knife shows and this reptile show in orlando was tiny compared to our small gun show in melbourne . . .

Im told Datona is rediculous though . .

either way i had fun. The deals wernt as great as i thought they would be or i was told they would be . . The only BRB that was at the show was selling for 160$ for a baby . . .

I did pickup a temp gun for my snakes cages for 20$ which i am happy about. I didnt get any snakes although i wanted too, there were a few Super Salmons i wanted bad but they wanted $1500 each for them.. . . . and i cant afford that right now! Saw a bunch more BCC's that cought my eye and even a few BCI's. Like i said only 1 rainbow in the entire show!

Also, i walk in and the first thing i see is like 4 tables of Rabbits, im like cool, food. Then i see a sign that says "these are NOT FOOD, they are loveable PETS!" im like WTF, you bring 50 rabbits to a reptile show and expect to sell them as pets? Crazy people . . .

My buddy i went with was going to buy a Male/Female pair of 66%het albino Hognoses for 100$ but he got an Argus Moniter instead (that thing is awsome, it pounds hopper mice like no tomorrow)

Well sorry for the long post i've gone on for a while now, just exited about my first show and i cant wait for Datona!

I am luckey, as Chicago area has some decent shows. The one is even 2 times per month.

On Sunday I went to the show, and made a real good contact with someone who has some brb's - with three of the females gravid too. They live close to me, and said I could have pick of the litters. They also raise feeder animals to sell, so I will probably start to buy feeders from them.

Daytona is certainly a sight to see.
This time of year is still on the early end of baby season too.. alot of what will be found in shows are imports.. or freshly born animals.. Give it another month or so, and all the shows (even the little mom and pop type shows) will improve greatly for a few months.

...about the rabbits for pets...

I went to a herp expo and bought a rat for a pet. It was meant to be a feeder and was only there with a bunch of others waiting to be picked up by some guy who was gonna feed them to his snakes. The guy didn't show...so I was able to buy the little guy. He didn't live long because he had lice....but at least he was happy.

Just to let you know there are people who go to these shows and have mercy for the furry and feathery food items.
