New blood hasn't eaten...

Lforlisa May 21, 2007 10:20 AM

it's been 3 weeks now, should I be concerned? I offer a live rat weekly but she is not interested. She will come out of her hide a little and look around somewhat, that's it. I know she will be stressed from being in a new environment. How long can I expect this to go on? She is 2 yrs. old and previous owner says she ate weekly w/out a problem.

I just got past this problem with a baby I got last month.
The dealer said she ate live rat pups. I tried f/t rat pups twice to see if I'd get lucky (it works half the time with new aquisitions). No luck. Tried live rat pups twice. No luck.
Tried a f/t mouse. It was taken with 10 minutes.
Of course I left it alone as much as possible in between feedings.
Also, I'm assuming your temps and humidity are good, and that there is a hidebox in the enclosure.

Ask the breeder what type of setup it was in. Ask what substrate they used, hides, what day and when did they feed (ex. Wednesday night)lights etc. If you can make the snake feel like it was returned to where it had been comfortable and eating they will usually start eating again quickly. Then you can start changing things little by little. like trying to feed in the afternoon if that is what you do, then try changing substrates to what you use etc. I usually find most snakes (not just bloods) make a better transistion when you do this. Of course you do not have to do this with all snakes. Some are just more difficult.
