Remembered the camera this time...

To bad it was only my cell phone...
You'd never know it to walk in my house, but I'm terrified of snakes... especially wild ones... which makes my first field catch that much better... If he'd have bit me, I probly would have cried... Sometimes I'm such a girlie girl it makes me sick... lol...
And ya, I know, its not a king, but I'm still happy...

He couldn't have been to scared, he gave me time to tie the horse and the dog and find him again...

He wasn't too keen on me pickin him up though...

but then he decided to be photogenic so I'd leave him alone...

I suppose I'm a wimp for bein scared of a little old garter snake, but the only way to get over you fear is to keep facing it...

I remember the first large adult bullfrog I encountered when I was 9 or so. The thing was massive and scared the bleep out of me. I remember quaking and wishing I wasn't scared of it - but I was. Then it jumped - and when it jumped, so did I.

lol... I was never scared of frogs, but up until I bought Spot, if I'd have encountered a garter snake in the wild, I probly would have killed it... Buying my first snake and hangin out on this forum has definatly changed my point of view...

I used to be very iffy about snakes up until we got Belle here, my first snake. I don't know if I was afraid, but definitely not a fan. Of course I thought everything I saw was not only poisonous, but out to get me personally! My wife convinced me to get Belle and she's quickly turned into just another spoiled member of our pet family.

She's gorgeous... good choice for a first...

I'm just glad I've learned a bit more about identifying snakes... Makes it easier to not be scared of the ones I find out in the woods...

I found that identifying snakes was really challenging. I saw a snake while out fishing, and simply couldn't figure out what it was. It was in the water, so I started there. But do a google image search for Northern Water Snake and you seemingly get dozens of different snakes! Variations, juvenile, phases, whatever. Checking web sites, the number of variations in descriptions that seemingly totally contradict eachother make snake identification a confusing task for a beginner like me. Could be this color, unless it's another color entirely. Usually has this, unless it doesn't. Then even if it does, you might not be able to see it. Oh yeah, and sometimes it doesn't look like that at all!

Thats one nice thing about western PA... you don't see too many variants of color on the snakes here... and there aren't too many different species... Makes identifying them a lot easier...

If you'd have seen the HUGE female I saw last saturday, you'd second guess yourself on callin this one a she...

I live in Clarion County in Western PA... I gotta deal with racers, rats, and garters, and remember to watch were the horses step around the water, we get some huge Timber rattlers and Copperheads around here too... unfortunatly, no kings here... at least that I've found yet... If there are any still around here, I'll find them this summer...
