I need an idea for a rat rack?

savana_man May 21, 2003 04:25 PM

I've looked on the new and old forums but no luck. If I have 1 male 1 female about how many pinkies will I get every week? I need to feed a savana monitor so how many couples of rats do I need and how do I keep them? Please any other info about feeding savs pinkies or caging ideas for rats are needed. Thanks

you dont need a rack system for them. Just get yourself a 20 gallon tank and a water bottle..

rack systems are only of a benefit if you are breeding larger numbers of rodents.. like 5 groups of 1.2 for example..

from 1.1 rats you can expect 7-15 pinks every 3-4 weeks or so.. so if you needed weekly pinks (live i would assume?) then you can plan on 1 female producing 7-15 every 3-4 weeks and figure out how many you need from there.

the biggest drawback is you cant plan WHEN the females will drop.. all mine seem to go at the same time.. so ill have 100 one week.. and none the next.. LOL

as far as for the sav goes.. not really sure.. you might wanna goto the monitor forum and see what the proper diet for a sav would be (ground turkey, crickets, mealworms?).. its been ALONG time since ive had a sav monitor

best of luck

Thanks!!! I will start to breed them when I get the new sav cage finished and furnished. I think I might also get an iguana this summer (only $5 at the Dixie Reptile Show)

I am gonna jump on my iguana soapbox for a sec and just point out (and in no way mean to insinuate you don't know it already) that igs should never get anything but vegetable proteins (no bugs, no mice- yes, they will chase and eat them, yes it will kill them from kidney and liver troubles in a few years)So that cheapo lizard will eat you through the vegetable dept at the grocery before fall.
AND igs cage requirements are even bigger than the savs.....since they get a couple feet longer and climb. And I don't know about other igs but mine is way more active and aggresive than my sav. Just an FYI.

dont buy an iguana.. they require massive cages, as well as LOTS of time and care.. as well as special lighting..

there are plenty of other really neat lizards you could get that are less work, and less likely to be got rid of when it gets 7' LOL..

some i can think of are..

Yellow Ackies
Red Ackies
Leopard Geckos
Tegu
Blue Tongue Skink

just to name the ones i've owned and just LOVED working with

not to mention.. iguanas are worse than cats or dogs for being without a home later in their life.. the herp society im in has a least 2-3 ADULT's a week for adoption.. it truely is sad

best of luck

I know they don't eat rats and stuff. Thanks for the post though!! I had one when I was 7 but my dad had it outside without a leash and you can guess the rest.

ok. I just love herps. I looked at the leos and they look good and get big enough to were I won't be afraid of breaking them like my ocelot geckos (madagascar ground geckos). There cool but there just to small to handle. I may sell them sometime.

i used to breed em for feeders for my leos LOL

leos can get HUGE.. i have a male thats almost 13" now.. and 130 grams.. i added a pic of him.. you can see him next to a 65 gram female

he just loves to eat his rat pinks

savana_man May 21, 2003 10:21 PM

were you kidding about feeding those geckos to him? My female isn't very big but my male is twice her size. No babies yet.

i bred pictus for some area petstores.. and it didnt take long before they didnt want/need anymore.. so i started feeding them to my leos and my ackies.. no diffrent in my mind than feeding a mouse or a rat to a snake.. everything is a food item for something else

savana_man May 21, 2003 10:43 PM

I would do that with mine now. But just the thought of a 50 dollar snack scares me. Thats what I had to pay for both of them. So i'll sell them to someone at the reptile show next month.
