Looking For Better Greens & Veggies!!!!

badcompnay May 21, 2007 04:11 PM

Hello Once Again!!!!

Update from my last post - finally decided to just get a notebook computer and get rid of the PC and the PC Table. Making more room to house my other Dragon in a cage on his own.

Now this has been an ongoing search / quest / crusade for me. My 2 dragons eat nothing but Romain Lettuce, dusted with vitamin powder and calcium. I went to this website:

http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html

and its been very very useful (if only local nurseries and such would have what Im asking!!!!)

Ive tried to mix a bunch of greens together and i only put a tiny lil bit of romaine in the "salad" and they pick out all the romaine and leave the rest. how aggrivating!

Does anyone know or have any techniques or tricks or ideas or ANYTHING to help me out????

Dragons are opertunistic so just ditch the romain all together and they will adapt.

I'll tell ya my technique I tried and it worked but remember not all dragons are the same. I had a picky "GREEN AND VEGGIE" eater at first too. Once I gave him a few waxworms (which are only good for snacks once in a while) to eat and after that it seemed like he wouldn't eat anything. So one day I decided to make a GREENS/CRICKETS/VEGGIE/VIT.D/WATER mix in the blender and get it nice and pureed. I also added some of the REPCAL BEARDED DRAGON FOOD that looks like fruity pebbles and have a nice smell...I then filled a needles syringe and after enticing him a few times he willing lapped it up. I did this a couple times a week. He usually told me when he didn't want anymore by walking away. Anyway after a few weeks of eating that he actually started to eat his food. I'm not sure if it was the smell or the taste of the mix that made him start eating his foods normally but it did work and actually when I made that lil mix I would store it in the frig for no more than a couple days and just give it to him like that. You could always try this as funny as it seems, but I can't say it didn't work cuz he grew quite fast. At 11 mos old he was 21" and 530 grams almost...He was a good dragon....R.I.P. POGO!

I agree that you should just take out the romaine. Maybe put in a little once or twice a week as a treat. I'd try mustard and collard greens, both seem to be popular with mine. Some of my dragons have been known to pick out the mustard greens. lol.

I can blame good health and coloraton on the fact my freak dragon eats carrots, I know hes not orange because of this but the vitamins and such just bring out what ever color weather its orange or red...Try some dandelions from outside if you live in a area you can trust to be free from pestacides...mine love em.

I make a salad of Dabndelion greens, Dandelions, collards, mustards, turnips, kale, and I think Im missing one but oh well..LOL he loves it( so do my others) once in a while they might get picky but I sneak what ever food they are rejecting in the mix and once they get that taste they chow down again.

Guys all this info is very good!

My beardie tends to be picky too. She loves squash (summer and butter, not spaghetti or acorn!) and is partial to orange/yellow foods. Trying to widen her variety, and wondering if colouring had anything to do with it or if it was just a coincidence, I got a yellow pepper. She took a lick of a piece and ran to the other end of the cage!!! So, no peppers for her. (She also won't eat bananas or celery. But she LOVES oranges and like carrots. But I only feed those as occasional treats cuz I generally try to follow the nutrition guide already posted)
Like yours, she LOVES dandelions- the flowers at least. Not crazy about the greens. I was wondering, do stores *sell* dandelion greens? I live in a small town and so the places near here don't, however the pet store where I used to buy crickets and worms is no longer selling feeders (??!!! It's the only place within 50 miles that sold them UGH) so in my search for a new petstore I'll probably run across some different grocery stores and was wondering if I should even bother looking. Also, I know the greens are ok, but can the flowers be used as a staple, or more just as a treat?
My beardie's not partial to greens, but when she's picked out all of the squash, she'll eat endive and, on occasion, kale. I'm *still* trying to find more things she'll eat tho!
