Mealworms,Waxworms or Crickets

Alanna May 21, 2007 05:14 PM

I am confused as to what would be the best diet for my Leo. I have been feeding him mostly crickets and twice a week i switch to wax worms (i usually give him 5 at a time) but i want to be sure he is getting the right diet. I read on this forum that crickets are not the best to give him all the time but then someone else says that wax worms should be a treat as they are full of fat? What about meal worms? My normal routine is to sprinkle either the crickets or waxies every 3 days with Vitamin supplement and i also have a dish of pure calcium in the tank. He seems very happy and actually gets excited when i go to feed him the worms so i must be doing something right but as i am a noobie (Have him since christmas)i want to make sure he is ok.My tank is tiled (Got a local tile company to cut the tiles to fit) and my temps are good. Sometimes though if i put in 5 crickets there will be 1 or 2 left the next day but i think this is around shedding time anyway. Please let me know if i am doing the right things

I use crickets and mealworms. i stay away from waxies because they can be addicting from what ive heard. Once they are addicted to waxies, it is hard to get them to eat anything else. i would continue feeding crix and add mealies and keep on dusting.. good luck..

This wax worm thing is annoying, its not that bad. Just don't depend on them and feed them some here and there once a week maybe every other week Id say about 10 of them, I never had any problems. I hatched a Leo that I gave to a friend and he fed mostly waxies while he was at collage while it was a Juvie and he didn't have any troubles either. I know he shouldn't have fed that many cause of other reasons but what could I have done to stop him. The bottom line was he never had any problems switching its diet or with its health and the thing is !!HUGE!! if anything crickets are the least nutritious, they need to constantly be fed nutritious foods and constantly need to be cleaned. Mealies, supers, red mealies, waxies and silks along with some roaches, butter worms "Occasionaly", pheonix worms...there is a huge list of healthy things besides stupid crickets that we should be looking into. The only thing crickets have on these items is the fact that almost every pet store has them and its not a hassel obtaining them...put it this way...I moved to Delaware a while ago..( I have since moved back to PA) I took all my animals with me, there wasnt a good petshop for quite a distance ( Id say about 35 miles Im not traveling that every other day) that had constant food.. beeing crickets.. for my animals. Once I started ordering foods off line I had so much more success with health, color, and so on, and so on, it was un real.
