sometime in the early 90's I was about 6-8 miles W. of Langtry at dusk. It was that time of day when you can still see well without a light, but a spotlight will add something on a rock cut. I shined across Hwy 90 and saw a large alterna on top of a rock cut near the forward edge. I walked over, tried to climb up a couple times, kept slipping off so I walked back to the car and got my hook. As I walked back to the cut I noticed that the snake hadn't moved and it looked VERY puffy. I could only see the midsection of the snake, but it was very very swollen. I decided that it was a DOR that someone had thrown up there. without looking at the snake I just reached the hook over my head as high as I could and pulled down, expecting a smelly corpse to fall on my head. As it was, perhaps the back 1/3 of it hung down the rock. I reached up to grab hold of it when it started moving upward. At this point I really started moving. I got up on top of the rock cut in time to see the tip of the tail about 18" into a hole. I guess it WASN'T a DOR that someone had stuck up there.
I did manage to catch it 5-6 days later, after it had dropped its eggs.
