My latest Q-Room addition......

rainbowsrus May 22, 2007 12:58 AM

Bet you thought it was another snake, NOPE!

I made me a new rack just for the Q-room. I wanted a small one and I wanted it to be flexible. So I designed it such that each of the three shelves could hold one of three size tubs:
one 32-QT lidless blanket box or
two 15-QT lidless sweater boxes or
three 6-QT lidded shoe boxes (will need a loose shelf added to hold down lids)

The plan is to use the 15-QT boxes for now and change them out if/when needed.

Here's a pic showing all three shelf options:

Best part of the project was it cost NOTHING!! Yup, zero dollars spent. Was made entirely from prior project scraps and leftovers!! Even the tubs were extra ones I had laying around!

Since I've already have experience from building a few other racks, this one only took me a few hours from start to finish to complete.

Majorly simple design, 6 pieces all 24" x 18" two are for the sides and the other four are for shelves and top. Edge banded one long side on all six pieces and both short ends for the side pieces. Add a scrap (measured and cut after assembly) to fill in the gap at the bottom, another piece for the back, three strips of heat tape (one per shelf) and voila!

I spend the weekend cutting materials for new racks too.
I really like the idea of having different size tub options together in one rack. Last year I built some baby racks to use 2 sterilite shoebox tubs side by side or one sweater box tub. Unfortunatly I built it measuring for the shoebox tubs and didn't realize until after every shelf was cut that the sweater box is just a little wider than 2 shoebox tubs side by side. So now those racks will only fit the shoeboxes. Now I know for next time I guess.

I kinda did the same thing on two racks in the hatchling closet. They were made for 2 sweater box wide and when I tried to put in a blanket box, would not fit with lid. Fortunately, they did fit w/out lid - barely. Since I use the larger tubs for larger snakes, the extra gap has not been a problem.

Pics with two sweaterbox, now many slots are one single blanket box (lidless)

What kind of clearance did you leave for ventilation Dave about 1/32 for the sub-adults?

Made these very tight and will ventilate with holes in the tubs.
The wide tub did not have holes and was only used for the pics.

That's way cool man, I don't own any type of woodworking tools. I just recently acquired a 7 tier 2221 Rubbermaid Animal Plastics rack for free from my best friend (John Rodriguez). Lidless systems are awesome, they conserve more time than I would have imagined for feeding and or cage maintenance. I have Visions, Neodesha's, Aquariums, and all kinds of Sterlites/Rubbermaid's that I utilize as enclosures for my animals, I find myself spilling the water a lot and having to redo paper when servicing the Neodesha's, they're pretty to look at though. lol

I will be buying more ( AP racks )in the future for my colubrid charges.

Thanks Jeff, That's the stuff, I even bought my own iron for the job. Have applied hundreds of feet of it in the last few years between the various rack projects and my new kitchen cabinets. Have to say the white plastic I used for banding melamine is much easier to work with than the thin oak I used for the kitchen. Have all the right tools to do the job semi professionally. Just short of an edge banding machine, Have the iron, a "J" roller (also typically used for bonding laminate) and a special block for trimming off the excess.

Very neat. Its gotta be nice to have more snakey room for no cost. I'm in the process of building a 54 space hatchling rack. Got all the pieces cut, just havent had the time to put it together yet. I've still got a little time before the eggs hatch, though.
