Silkworms vs. Roaches

daveman May 22, 2007 02:26 AM

Is anyone using silkworms anymore? It seems that a couple of years ago they were the rage and now its all about roaches. I'm at the point where I want to do something other than crickets and I'm thinking about breeding silkworms. I've read plenty and realize that it may be slightly more difficult breeding and keeping silkworms over roaches.....and I know I sound like a wussie when I say this but I cant get over the idea of breeding roaches. So silkworms seem to be ideal for me...I just rarely see them for sale anymore....

I have not done silkworms. I took the hint that they'd be a PITA to raise and I didn't want more stress I wanted less. So I went to roaches. Specifically I raise Hissers and Lobsters. They are fast breeders, eat anything, don't smell and work well to feed what I want. No brainer.

I like silk worms alot, i havent bred them ever, but i buy them as often as possible for my frogs. they are super high in protein compaired to crickets more meat to them also. i also really like the horned worms too, and butter worms are great also. i have a small colony of Dubia roaches going but they havent really taken off yet.

Your frog looooves those silkies...well I'm sure he loves anything food related. Good pics...makes me miss my pac-man frog that I had so many years ago. One of these days I'll get another one....
