Hondo not eating

Spankenstyne May 22, 2007 02:48 AM

I've never really encountered this with my Honduran before. I've had him for about 3 years, raised from a wee baby and he's always greedily taken f/t mice (adults for some time now). I offered a f/t rat pup a month ago and he didn't seem too keen & didn't bother with it, no biggie i thought and offered an adult mouse and no dice.
I waited a week and tried again, again no luck. So I tried several different variables including night time feeding, braining the mouse, offering a smaller meal etc. I even went as small as a f/t fuzzie just to try and coax a feeding response. No luck at all.
I let a week go by and try again, no luck. Again today he seems not at all interested, even sliding right over it and ignoring the mouse while he cruises his enclosure.

The only different variable is that i did fix the light around the time i also tried the rat pup. It had been sort of "dusky" looking in there for quite some time with regular daily ambient light in the basement.

Now it's quite bright during the day, but i catch him basking all the time now, while before he hid away most of the time.

Is it possible he's gone off food because he's gone into breeding mode with the changes to his enclosure & time of year??

I'm going to try a smaller live tomorrow to see if i can trigger anything. Just kinda boggled why after so long he's not eating.

He looks otherwise healthy & a week or two with no food wouldn't phase me, but it's been about a month now and while otherwise healthy he is a tiny bit on the slim side of healthy.

I would think at three years of age he is wanting to breed, and nothing else matters to him now. It is that time of year.

I've got a huge male that goes off feed when it's breeding time. I just checked my notes on him from years past and he always drops off of feeding at breeding time.
Right now he has not eaten for nearly two months, but he is fine, only lost a little weight.
Your Honduran will be fine I'm sure. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I had suspected as much & he's holding weight just fine. Helps put the mind at ease though

Thanks!
