Addicted to tortoises???...

-ryan- May 22, 2007 12:07 PM

I was wondering who else here is afflicted with my addiction. For some reason I keep having the urge to get more tortoises! I've even gone as far as surfing the web, debit card in hand, and almost hitting the 'add to cart' button numerous times.

So I thought it would be an interesting thread idea if we all wrote two lists. The first is of all the reptiles you own, and the second is of all of the reptiles you would own if you had acted on your impulses.

Here we go:

1.2.1 (I believe it's 1.3) Russian Tortoises
0.2 mali uromastyx
1.0 bearded dragon
1.0 leopard gecko
1.0 ball python

and the list of what I would have (and this is taking into account only the purchases that I've actually almost made):

4.10 Russian Tortoises
1.2 Pancake Tortoises
1.2 Cherry Head red-foots
1.1 Red foots
0.0.1 Sulcata tortoise
0.0.1 Leopard tortoise
1.2 Egyptian tortoise
1.1 Indian Star Tortoises
1.0 Greek Tortoise
0.0.1 Marginated Tortoise
0.0.1 Savanna monitor
1.0 Blue Tegu
1.0 Argentine B/W tegu
1.2 Ackie monitors
1.2 Bearded dragons
1.3 mali uromastyx
1.2 Ornate uromastyx
1.1 Blue Tongued skinks
1.2 leopard geckos
1.2 crested geckos
1.3 Ball pythons
1.0 Albino ball pythons
1.1 Pastel ball pythons
1.0 Corn snake
1.0 Jungle carpet python
1.1 Spotted pythons
0.1 Columbian Boa Constrictor
0.1 Red Blood Python
0.0.1 Albino Pac man Frog

and I'm sure there's more. Seeing this list makes me really REALLY glad that I don't act on impulse.

BTW, the reason I decided to make this thread is because I've been thinking about getting more tortoises again (a single specimen of a large species, and I'm also interested in a breeding group of pancake torts), but in reality, I don't want any more right now. I'm having a ball working on getting my breeding group of russians going (there's tons of breeding going on, but I'm not sure if the male is fertile yet. He's under two years old, and only about 4.5-5" shell length, raised from a hatchling, and I feel like it will take a couple years before there's any more success, other then the eggs that have been laid by one of my females due to sperm retention), and I am really enjoying seeing my hatchling russian grow up, since I have seen basically her whole life process so far, like her mother nesting and laying her egg, her hatching, and now she's growing like a weed. I know that it is best to wait until she is grown and the other torts are established as a breeding colony to start on another tort project, but they are just so much fun!

Please share your experiences.

I too have searched with debit card in hand but I have to think of the well being of the animals. I have to hold back untill I am positive that I have the right set up for any tort I buy before it gets here. I have 4 torts now and could easily take care of twice that amount from april to october but the winter is harder for me to house them so I have to be selective.

by the way my wife thinks I am obsesed with torts and calls me and anyone on this forum a bunch of tortoise geeks!!!!

I just smile and keep typing.

have now
1 sulcata
1 greek
1 redfoot
1 leopard

paln to add
a pair or trio of pancakes
and a mate for each the above listed
and 1 or 2 star torts

I have

1 hermanns tortoise, 1 ornate box turtle and 3 leopard geckos (2 are 15 years old now)

I live in a 1 bedroom apartment so I don't have room for anything else but what I would love to have if I could feasably take care of them includes

indian star tortoises, yellow footed tortoises, burmese brown and black tortoises, impressed tortoises, spider tortoises, piebald ball pythons, egyptian uromastyxs, fly river turtles, mud turtles, Chersina angulata, Geochelone chilensis, Cistoclemmys galbinifrons (cuora galbinifrons), tent tortoises, mata matas, ornate wood turtles, big headed turtles . . . just about anything shelled . . .

Hi !
I too suffer from this addiction ! My darling hubby calls it O.C.T.D. - Obsessive Compulsive Tortoise Disorder - LOL ! He's working on a 12 step program to help with this ! I won't list my shell babies here (incase he reads this - I don't want him to know just HOW many there really are - LOL ! ) but if my acreage was just a little bit bigger I would add an aldabara to my collection of shell children and maybe a trio of pancakes and a pair of Burmese stars and how about a Mountain tort.....! Yesss I have it reallllly baaaadddd - !
Best Regards Melissa Rose

I have jsut 1 Sulcata. That's good enough for me, but it's still tempting every reptile show I go to! In a few months an 11 year old 5' Iguanna is going to be moving in.
