How long without food?

scrapulous May 22, 2007 05:17 PM

So we're going out of town for four days. If I fill up his bowl with pellets, fill another bowl with greens, and another bowl with water, will he be good? His light and heater are on timers.

He's two years old now. I normally give him food every other day, but he doesn't eat as often as I feed him. Often his food bowl is untouched when I go to feed him again, but I still empty it and refill it with fresh food/greens. He probably only eats every three or four days anyway.

The longest I've left him is three days, so the extra day here is making me nervous. What do you think?

I'd find a pet sitter.

I would'nt even consider leaving mine one day without prior arrangements for feeding and cleaning.

The whole reason I got a dragon and not a dog is so I can go places for a couple days. Low maintenance once they're grown. When he was a baby, I brought him with us when we went out of town for the weekend, tank and all. But now he's older and doesn't eat as often, so I see no need to have someone check on him daily.

OK. I understand you opinion/decision. So why ask the question? When mine brumate the don't eat for up to 4 months. So I'm sure they won't starve if it's inconvenient for you to have them fed for a few days.

I'm sorry my last message sounds curt. But, I feel you are looking for justification for something that you are already uncomfortable with. You have to manage your committment to your pet with the rest of your life and decide what is the best for each. From what you have said maybe no pet is the best option. Sorry.

Ahh, c'mon, sport, I think you're a better person than that.

Your first jab was decent, it got attention without being too offensive. This second one, though........, well, read it again be honest with yourself.

I realize you're lookin' out for the animal and I can see how you came to the conclusion that "scrapulous" was probably looking more for confirmation/justification than other viewpoints. However, once you tick the animal's owner off, you lose all chances of helping the animal.

I'll stop there because I'm not trying to bash you or embarass you. The good Lord knows that I ain't perfect. I've said a few things that I've had to go back and apologize for, myself. And I'll probably do it again before I die.

Hang in there, relax!

Have a good one!

4 days is a little long to have your dragon alone. It would be good to have somebody check in on him at least once while you are gone if possible. Though I don't think he will starve to death in 4 days, something unexpected could always happen and its good to have somebody check in on him daily.

PHLdyPayne hit the nail on the head.

It's not gonna starve within 4 days, however, it probably will get hungry.

What if a timer shorts out and leaves basking light on the whole time? Or, the bulb burns out?

What if your house A/C goes on the blink and room temps rise, thereby increasing cage temps?

"What ifs" have teeth. And they can bite hard.

As long as you don't mind if me & my biker gang have a "Girls Gone Wild" party there, I'll come housesit for ya. LOL

Have a good one!
