Artgeckko how are your egyptians doing?

georgio Aug 15, 2003 03:48 PM

My little one Nebu is not growing very fast. He still looks like a large hatchling and I've had him for 7 months. He seems to eat a lot, had a clean fecal and my temps are right. I'm thinking of trying to get him more sunlight to raise the luminosity he experiences. I also bought some yellow hibiscus bushes so that should give him more treats. How is your large female (Lucy right?). It doesn't seem like Boulder is growing any more but I haven't weighed him again.

Now that it is summer I realize Boulder was definitely showing full blown breeding behavior in early spring. He has changed a lot. No more headbobbing, chasing the cat or grabbing my arm. We'll see if he starts again next January. Speaking of Boulder I better go get him, he's lying on the lawn outside my window.

Doing real well!
I have actually expanded lately to include an indian hatchling and ornate hatchling. They share the same enclosure for now. Both are 6" and 40 grams.
The Egyptians are eating me out of house and home.
Have not done any measuring lately, but they eat so much.
5 at 16"+equals alot of greens..........
I have been cycling them outdors lately as much as possible. Had two together and one got a bad bite on the arm.I am realy thinking of brumating them this winter.
Also-I responded to a post and mentioned my longest owned uro(Oscar) who has just gone on a rampage lately. She has tried to bite me numerous times, hisses at me and lunges at me from her enclosure. Any ideas...A response questioned health...not a bad idea...but no symptoms of ill health are present.
Lucy...I think Lucy is a boy. Actually, think I have 2 females and 3 males. I increased my photo gallery size so I will be adding photos soon.
I also talked to Lindsay Pike regarding Microlepis and Egypticus. When he returns from daytona, I hope to get some information discerning the two.
As far as growth rates for Nebu-
Oscar is my only comparason. What is Nebu's stat's?
How is his eating? Do you offer insects?
Boulder looks great!!!

Wow, I can't imagine feeding that many large Egyptians. Boulder alone eats a "bunch" of greens every day. Now that I'm taking care of an Iguana and my 10 Bearded Dragons it's quite a chore chopping greens but 5 large egyptians I'm sure tops what I have to do.

I've been trying to get my lizards outside as well with the weather as it's been. Boulder absolutely loves being outside but I don't have a cage large enough for him so he usually only gets out an hour at a time. My yard is fenced so I can put him outside and watch him from the window in my room but after an hour he really heats up and starts trying to explore everywhere so I generally bring him back in.

I'm not sure what's going on with Oscar...that's really strange. My only experience with "strange" behavior came when Boulder was in mating season but he was not agressive in the normal sense. He would just headbob a lot and sometimes try to "grab" your arm or sleeve with his mouth but it was much different than a bite. It's kind of hard to explain, not sure if you know what I mean. It could simply be something to do with sexual maturity. I know many other people with Egyptians say they can be agressive.

Nebu is really starting to worry me. He has not gained weight since may and has only gained 15 grams ( from 15 to 30) since I bought him last december! He his mixed greens well and got a clean fecal a few months back but I may have him checked again. I'm also planning on giving him a product called "worm guard" which is very similar to parazap in ingredients. I stayed away from insects before but in the last couple weeks I have given him a few crickets to try and get him gaining some weight. Do you feed insects to your Egyptians? He seems healthy and alert...I'll recheck my rechecked temperatures, possible getting another light to raise the ambient on the coolside. Any thoughts on the issue would be much appreciated.

Glad your animals are doing well. Keep my updated if your planning on breeding, I am quite interested on how that goes for you.

Hey Peter-been gone for a week-bulked up the animals and split.
They seemed to do well for a week without me.....

Yeah-feeding them is a half hour event. My nasturtiums are in bloom-so yard picking is now part of the event....
Wow-you have yourself quite a group of animals. I've seen the picts of your dragon..very nice..
I know what you mean by the mating behavior. My Asian dragon male would do similar behavior. It was much slower and deliberate. This is very sudden and quick. I'm not scared by her, but I got nipped on the finger and that skin is gone
In regards to Nebu. I have read documentation about keeping large males in the same room with sub adult and juveniles. Reportedly, the juveniles would be intimidated by a large male-and cause growth problems.
Could this be possible?
I have thought that Oscar's new behavior could be being caused by looking at Grover-8 feet away.
If you have ever kept Chameleons, they have similar problems. They are extremely territorial.
I would talk to as many of the professional breeders regarding this issue. He should be growing to approx, 12" by now. I do offer my animals insects but in no regularity.
What about lighting? I really like the Active UVB bulbs. They really seem to work. Is he skittish? Stressed? Does he have a clear view of Boulder? I put up barriers between Lucy and the new babies...seemed to reduce their reluctance to go to that side of the enclosure.
A clean fecal-did they check for protozoans?

Maybe try wheat bread. I use Catalina wheat berry bread. Mine really love it. Maybe he needs a certain food item he is looking for?
Just brainstorming...
Let me know
