New computer, need help resizing pics...

thebigsquease May 22, 2007 09:58 PM

With my old Desk Top, I had downloaded a program that I could re-size my photographs so I could post them here on Kingsnake.
They only allow pics up to 150k. My camera, even on email mode, takes pics in the 170k to 200k range. The other settings go up to 200M range.
I now have a new lap top with Microsoft Vista. The old program will not work, nor can I even get it to interact with Vista.
So, what do I do now? I have some pictures I would like to post, but Kingtsnake will not upload, for they are to large.
Any help would be greatly appericated.

Go to pictures...Double click on the pic you want to resize to make it full screen...

At the top right of the screen click on "open" you should have Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition...Click on that to open...

Then at the top click on Format and it gives you the option to Resize Image...Click on that...

I go down to Pixel Dimension and change the width to about 700 or 800 and the height should change automatically...Then click on done at the bottom...

Hope this helps and isn't to confusing...

A simple way as follows:

START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > PAINT

Once the Paintbrush program opens, go to:

File > Open >

Then select the photo wherever you have it. I sometimes save my photos to the Pictures File or Documents as a JPEG first, or you can open them directly from the cameras SD, XD,...ETC card.

Once the photo is opened:

File > Save AS > From the drop-down window select "Save as Type" now select JPEG > Save > Confirm Save as press "Yes".

This will resave the picture in a much smaller JPEG format.
(Note:this step can be omitted if you already know the picture is in the JPEG format. If unsure do this step).

Next Select:

Image > Attributes > Then press Pixels "dot"

This will list how the picture is setup. You have to be 1200 x 1028, no larger to upload.

Now you can either change the Width and Height fields to 1200 X 1028, the press:

File > Save

OR..., You can go to:

Image > Resize/Skew > and the reduce the Horizontal and Vertical percentages until the photo is the correct size when you recheck it under the previous Image > Attributes > Pixels selection.

I go back and forth between Resize/Skew and Image > Attributes > Pixels, reducing the pictures Horizontal and Vertical size by 10% until the photo is 1200 X 1028 or less.
(Note: Its very important you do both the Horizontal AND Verticle the SAME percentages, or you will screw up the pictures aspect ratio and it will look funny).

Its easy once you do it a few times.

The file will now be a JPEG(not too many pixels) and the correct size 1200 X 1028 or less.

It can then be uploaded through the Photos selection at the top of the page.

Good Luck

Macs are the best, and unlike PC's and the Ball Python Market, hold their value quite well for many reasons....
I know, because I do it for a living
Mac-Pro.com

Vista?
What a joke!
PC with vista = an un-stable, cheap, virus prone, wannabe Mac....

phantompoo May 23, 2007 12:41 PM

i need ur help

been using ps cs2 and have been doing all sorts of small things for people (have no formal training in image editing software)

had a few designs i did for tshirts. they got the ok and when bringing them to printing place there was som kind of inconsistency with ps and the software/hardware used to print tshirts (god why cant it ever be simple)

they use corel draw

problems have something to do with my colors need to be spot colors(only pantones) and need to be color seperated (photoshop allows u to save in such a format, yet i dont know how to acutally seperate the colors or tell which are pantones)

HOW THE HELL DO I CONVERT IMAGES TO SOMETHING THEY CAN USE????

its ok if none this makes sense to you since i really dont know what im talkin about. thanks for your time

except about macs

PC > mac hehe

idealreptiles May 23, 2007 10:39 PM

Requires the format to be in vector
(vector-based images can be scaled indefinitely without degradation.... A must have when printers are editing/resising your image and want it to be perfect)
http://www.inkscape.org/index.php?lang=en

What does it do?
"It's a FREE vector graphics editor."
What is it undercutting?
"[Adobe Illustrator] and [CorelDraw]." which both have steeper learning curves and larger feature sets than Inkscape... and are expensive!

My other hobby is custom printed promotional items.

MAC>PC hehehe

Macs are supposed to be the best for graphics arts, thats why so many Ad companies use Mac.

Ill go with PC DELL though thanks.

toshamc May 23, 2007 11:37 AM

LOL - yeah - macs are great for things like the arts, movies, music, etc. stuff - but really do lack a compatibility with real world uses - but I do love the commercials.

used mac, and never come to a dead end yet, where I can't do something, and I have NEVER had any virus.

Have fun with your PC, and it's open window to hackers.

zefdin May 23, 2007 09:14 PM

The only reason hackers dont bug-up on the Macs, is because its not worth their time - nobody uses the things.

Empty bank vaults can brag about not getting robbed too, but theres a reason for it.

Lol

idealreptiles May 23, 2007 10:52 PM

Macs are pricier then PC's... and used less frequently often because of this.
This means Mac users must have more money then the average PC user.
Most people end up settling for a Crappy Dell. (and regret it in a few years)
That, and the fact that so many PC users HATE them, you would think just the opposite...

ChrisGilbert May 24, 2007 06:37 PM

Macs don't get viruses because the opperating system is Unix based, as is Linux which can work on Mac or PC. WINDOWS SUCKS! The end.

I think he has the pics setup as Bitmaps, thats why they are so large, he was saying they were like 3 or 4 meg - no? I think he has to convert them to JPEG in addition to resizing.

vcane May 23, 2007 11:19 AM

ah SEE I just noticed he was useing Vista too so I don't know about that. Seems like alot of people aren't digging Vista don't know though.

Windows XP program does not work for Vista. I tried it. No go.
That is why I posted here asking for help. The old XP program worked great. I used it all the time. Now, with Vista, I'm at a dead end.......

In Windows Photo Gallery you can do simple adjustments and crop. The tool bar across the top you should see file, fix, info, etc.... go to "open" and it should take your picture and put it in paint where you can adjust the size. If you have added editing software you when you click on "open" it should give you a choice of what program you'd like to open the picture in.

LOL - Vista comes with a program called Windows Photo Gallery - where you can view your photos - you should also have a paint program (somewhere on there) which you can use to resize your photos. Vista sets the Windows Photo Gallery as the default photo viewer - so if you open your photos in Vista - you are likely using the Windows Photo Gallery program - look for the "open" link at the top of the photo gallery and click it - your photo should open into the paint program where you can resize.

If you can find and go directly the paint program on your computer you don't have to mess with Windows photo gallery. I just figured if you were able to view you pictures on your computer you were likely already in Photo Gallery - if not then maybe if you could figure out which program you are viewing in we could guide you a little better.

Take the pice in the regular mode, not the email mode. This will wotk fine as long as you save the picture as a JPEG, either when you add it to your pc, or you can change it to JPEG format when you edit it later.
