water catch basin....need advice

mbmcewen Aug 15, 2003 04:43 PM

I have a 26 X 26 X 54 cage with a 4 foot bushy hibiscus in it. The cage is on legs about 6 inches off of the floor.
What do you guys use as drainage basins? Keep in mind that this cham is in a spare bedroom, so solution must be practical. Wife would not go for cutting holes in the floor or pouring concrete.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions....may there be many

Here's what works for me:

I have 16" pot saucers the each plant sits in.
Then I have 1/4" tubing in each of the saucers. Then, I have the tubing connected to a shop-vac. Each morning and evening, I turn on the shop-vac and it pumps out the saucers. Empty the shop vac once a week.. and there ya go.

Rats! just when I was going to say cut a hole in your floor and pour some concrete!

Actually my cage is raised on legs and I slide plastic under bed storage tubs under it to catch the water. The bottom of my cage is wire so the water can fall through. I also have a large piece of plexi or you can use a large mat or sheet of formica found at a home center under the whole thing to save your rug.
