Wild photo opt - Eastern Hognose

PHWyvern May 23, 2007 08:23 PM

Eastern Shore, VA

A nice female hognose around 2.5 feet long that we found on the side of a grassy park trail on the VA Eastern Shore this weekend. She was very well behaved. Some hissing, but not hooding or trying to get away or attempting to play dead. Took some photos and put her back on the ground where she slithered off into the brush. Would have loved to have taken her home, but it was state/park property - not private.

Is she missing the rostral scale?! It looks like the actual hog NOSE is gone in the closeup. o_O

She has one but it's stunted looking.. not as pronounced as I have seen in other hogs.

Very nice indeed! Good size!
Thanks for posting (love pics of wild snakes)!
Eastern hoggies are my favorite (of the hoggie family). They are the only ones I keep besides my large collection of kingsnakes...
