Corn snake in a planted vivarium

zach_whitman May 23, 2007 11:20 PM

So this is my first attempt at designing a planted vivarium that is tough enough for a small snake.

I had nothing to do this afternoon and this little guy was outgrowing his hatchling rack. I found some rocks and branches in the woods, and used a mixture of cypress mulch and coco fiber for bedding. I took some cuttings from a pothos plant on my porch and planted them directly into the tank. I packed some top soil into the corners where the plants are. We will see if the cuttings can take while the snake is in there with them.

This is sort of experimental, I am moving in a few months, so it will get broken down, but I just wanted to see if it could work.

Oh, the tank is a 10 gallon and is heated from below with a pad, as well as a heat light during the day.

Looks pretty natural, good.

I'm not nitpickin' it, by any means, but even though the corn looks happy now, I'm sure it would like a place or two to hide. Might could remove some bedding from under a rock or something, leaving a hole for it. But then again, you may already have one in there that I can't see.

Have a good one!

Yep there are two hides between/behind the rocks for him to squeeze into, one warm one cool. Hasn't used either though for more then a minute, he has chosen to sleep in the plants in the topmost corner.

Good deal. I kinda figured from the details you put into it that there was probably one there.

Its fun building natural, showroom displays, isn't it?

Take care!

Looks like you're off to a great start! I read the post from lower down mentioning the hide spots. It's kinda interesting but some snakes will use a hide box all the time in a more sterile, spartan setup. However, when you move them to a naturalistic setup they'll choose to sit right out where you can see them. I've set up cages where animals will sit right out where you can see them because everything was designed to make them feel secure without having to hide in a dark hole.

Yeah, this little guy actually ended up digging his own hide spot. But he has also bee spending lots of time out in the open.
