my friend's monitor just died.

ryuki_ukiyo May 24, 2007 05:17 AM

hi guys, im helping my friend to find out what happen to his dumeril. its dead now. it was doing great for almost 4 months now but died yesterday without warning. his description is as below:

"1) food intake, daily evening. diet: small live shrimps/crickets
2) 3 feet tank, mesh cover. 50W heat lamp. outside in balcony, get sufficient amount of sunlight(no UV lamp)
substrate: reptile carpet(cleaned biweekly), water bowl(cleaned once in 2 days), a hide, and a treated branch
3) Handled it almost everyday after feeding and drinking(usually deficates while drinking) so after that.
4) no extreme noticable symptoms. refused to eat the day before. otherwise fine. have refused food in the past too. didn't seem like a big deal.
5) no exposure to any wild specimen, in fact any of my other pets too.
6) no drop from from any elevation in the past month. have droped from the height of 18 inches in the past. more tha a month ago. but semmed fine when i checked.
7) i would say, was eating really good. but i'm kinda sceptical about the weight gain. wasn't really gaining as much weight as i thot it would. he was still growing though"

since i am still new at varanids, i kind of need more information on the matter because i too have dumerils. infact they are the same batch. they only difference is that my husbandry is much more different than his such as i dont feed everyday but on every other day, dirt as substrate, water change everyday, i dont play without them at all except to check their health, feeding or cleaning and etc. at the moment all of my dumerils are alive and pretty much healthy. but who knows right. therefore i sincerely thank you in advance for your kind effort in providing the details pertaining to the matter.

I'm guessing dehydration or maybe heat exhaustion. A glass(?) tank out in the sun in addition to a 50 watt bulb going with a mesh top sounds like trouble. Plus the handling everyday probably didn't help. Anyway, sorry for your friend's loss.

3 feet tank mesh cover outside in balcony reptile carpet
Handled it almost everyday = Husbandry issues

You didn't mention any temperatures but from what you did say, it is pretty clear what happened. The dehydrated, stressed monitor could take no more.

No substrate, dehydration, stress, and exposure to the elements.

Im confused.

By "tank" im guessing you mean aquarium? Not one of those Reptarium completely mesh things... right?

OUTSIDE in balcony... where you live? cause if its warm enough for the monitor to live outside, and its a glass tank, you prolly have a sun-baked lizard on your hands.

Ok, im sorry.... seems to me EVERYTHING about their husbandry was faulty- werent feeding properly, had a VERY poor cage setup, bad cage location, overbearing handling (stress).

That this animal made it 4 months seems amazing to me, personally.

Since you seem to not see how everything about that setup was bad, Im gonna have to ask: How do you have yours setup? Can you please give a description? Thanks.

There could be many many reasons, but as mentioned, two pop out, Glass tanks in the sun are a complete and utter NO, NO. Never do that. Even if there is shade and the temps are normal, for some reason monitors cannot detect that type of heat and sit in the sunny areas and die.

Second, is screen lids and heat lamps do not work together. It converts any cage into a Beef Jerky(dried meat) making device. This is fatal to monitors.

So there you have two obvious reasons. Cheers

hi guys,

so sorry for late reply but i have been busy. anyway, we had pretty much concluded the problem. after our conversation in the phone that night, i tend to have the same thought as the rest of you guys ie heat exhaustion. thanks so much for such kind replies.

note: and no, the dead dume wasnt mine. it used to be though but not anymore. for your information please.

regards
